Music is Freedom.
Just finished watching all of Your Lie In April and for me personally, it was okay? I think I’m just a huge sucker for the friends-to-lovers troupe that I was purely watching it for Kousei and Tsubaki…it probably sounds really bad but I literally couldn’t have cared less for Kaori…sweet girl and everything but her storyline was predictable from the beginning so idk…teen me would’ve probably liked it a ton more and gotten an emotional kick from it tho 🤷♀️

Your Lie in April let’s gooooo (warning: this is gonna be a long one and it’s for my Emi Igawa/Ryota Watari rarepair heart)
So the characters are now 18, their last semester before they head off to university. Emi Igawa, ever the emotional hurricane of a human, has what can only be described as an emotional meltdown at her piano lesson due to her anxieties about her future (as Kousei Arima and Takeshi Aiza already have set plans, but hers are still up in the air). Her piano instructor gently suggests she take a break from piano for a bit until she gets her emotions under control, which of course sets her off. After they fight, she storms off to a club to make some poor decisions. The same club, it turns out, where the local girl’s softball team has gone to celebrate their last game before they all split ways…
Tsubaki, competitive as ever, gets into a drinking contest with some older boys, and the team ends up calling Kousei & Ryota Watari to come take her home. While Kousei is busy wrangling a tipsy Tsubaki (who just wants to crush these losers in a dance-off), Watari discovers Emi, who begs him not to tell Kousei she’s here, since she doesn’t want him to see her upset. Concerned, Watari tells Kousei he’s going to make sure another girl gets home safe, and so Kousei escorts Tsubaki home alone.
Watari and Emi spend a few more hours at the club, trading barbs back and forth–he thinks she’s hot but scary, she thinks he’s just another jock playboy (although being friends with Kousei earns him a singular point). Their conversation deepens, and to her surprise, Emi finds Watari to be kinder than expected. What’s more, he understands her anxiety about choosing a path for the future–in fact, he shares the same sentiments. After the day she’s had, Emi is in the market to make a dumb decision…so she kisses him. Watari tells her she must be drunk, and she reveals that she’s been drinking water the whole time. One thing leads to another, and well…they have a one night stand.
Afterwards, Watari is understandably head over heels, but Emi ghosts him. He’s no Kousei after all, even though deep down she likes him a lot more than she’d ever admit. Tsubaki doesn’t know who Watari is pining for, but she recognizes the signs, and tries to support him as best she can. Similarly, Kousei and Takeshi know something is up with Emi–her piano playing becomes more rigid, almost like she’s using music to contain the emotions inside her instead of set them free. It’s not until Emi sees that little pink plus sign on that pregnancy test that she realizes just how much her life is about to change…
BONUS: Kashiwagi is the only one who knows everything about what’s going on because she saw the two of them at the club and once she noticed Watari being all sad and heard about Emi acting weird around Kousei, she put 2 + 2 together.
