Wilbur doesn’t remember much of the incident, it was so long ago, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less. There was a gaping hole in his memory where the incident should’ve taken place, yet he doesn’t remember. Maybe it’s better if he didn’t remember. He knows his brother died that day, he knows that he was one of the many lives that had been taken. Knowing that and having the past stand in front of you is… He couldn’t even begin to describe what he was feeling.
“Wilbur, run! It’s dangerous! Get out of here-”
His brother’s last words rang through his mind, Grian had cared for his safety before his own, and it cost him his life. That was the only thing he remembered clearly. He was caught in the crossfire and his brother paid the price.
“It’s dangerous! Get out of here-”
Yet, there he was, standing in front of him. Deafening silence filled the room as the two brothers stood in the darkened hallway. A cold atmosphere surrounded the two of them as neither of them moved an inch. Grian had a worn down look and a saddened smile on his face. The face of melancholy, of regret.
He looked so young. He looked more like Tommy than himself. It’s like he was frozen in time, from the exact moment he last saw him. The same blonde hair and red jumper, now stained with dirt and blood. A pair of wings sat behind the boy, emitting a hazy purple glow.
“Grian…” Wilbur couldn’t help but let the name slip from his mouth. “Is… is it really you?”
“Yeah, Will.” Grian replied. “It’s me.”
Before Wilbur could reply to him, a strangled sound came from Tubbo. Grian immediately rushed to the stone brick cell, Wilbur following swiftly behind. Tubbo laughed at the sight of Grian, muttering something about Tommy. He then cried and clinged onto Grian, sobs escaping from his scratchy throat. “Will…?”
“Oh god,” Grian whispered. “What did they do to him?”
“He has too many memories, something- no, someone took the memories of my friend and they put it in Tubbo. I-” Wilbur tried not to cry. “I don’t know what to do.”
“Oh no…” Grian said. “He was one of the recruits, wasn’t he?”
“The what?”
“People are being recruited, Will. I- I tried to stop them, he’s- he’s too young. I’m so sorry…”
“Grian,” It felt so hard to say that name again. “Can you do something?”
“I- well-” Grian started. Someone’s footsteps came from the hallway, echoing throughout the cells.
“Will, you have to get out of here. It’s not safe.”
Wilbur couldn’t move.
“Get out of here-”
He couldn’t leave him to die again.
“No- No! I can’t leave you again. I just-”
“Wilbur, there’s no time!” He helped Tubbo stand up. “You two have to go.”
“Tubbo- yeah, Tubbo right? Can you stand?” Grian said to the young boy.
Wilbur took Tubbo into his arms. “Grian, please-”
A portal opened up behind him. “Go. This portal will take you where you want to go.”
He felt the tug of the portal behind him but he didn’t move. “I can’t leave you!”
“You have to. Wilbur, I’m so sorry.” Grian put two fingers to Tubbo’s temple. “His mind can’t handle the memories, I’m going to have to take them.”
“What?! Wait-”
A cry escaped from Grian’s throat. His hand recoiled from Tubbo’s head. “Will,” Grian clutched his head in pain. “Go!”
A force pushed Wilbur and Tubbo into the portal. The last thing he saw, once again, was the pained face of his brother.

Alright so I’ll admit I’m not the most knowledgeable about it, so I went to the awesome @give-grian-rights for help and she wrote this out:
Watchers are essentially a demi-god like creature within Minecraft fan lore, more specifically MCYT fan lore, stemming from Grian. Grian was in an SMP called Evo, a server with a handful of members starting out in the first version of Minecraft which allowed multi-players. Hints, clues and scavenger hunts were littered across their world, they had to piece together clues to locate a portal which would lead them to the next game version, progressing through going through tasks while doing so. That's where the concept of Watchers came from, beings watching the actions of the Evolutionists and either rewarding or punishing them based on their actions throughout the server. Mazes, experiments, etc were all done to attempt to get an understanding of, well,, the players sense of self, and how they react.
By the time the Evolutionists reached the version which introduced The End, they had been told through a series of messages throughout their world that they needed to fight the Enderdragon as soon as they could. When they arrived, Grian was split from the rest and had to fight the dragon by himself, with the others no where in sight. When he jumped through the portal, the Watchers addressed us, the audience, and the Evolutionists. Grian was taken to join their ranks. People have done with this whatever they can think of, as it leaves a lot of possibilities! Why was he taken? Did he know this was gonna happen? Did he agree to it? Why him? How do they treat him? How does he feel about them, after a series full of going against their word and distrust? That's when Fanon and AUs come into play!

Ok so heres the au bit, from what ive gathered from Mika’s blog. Again, she’s the one that created all of them. :D
Basically in this au, Tubbo and Tommy get kidnapped by the watchers. In one version, Taurtis watches Tubbo and Grian watches Tommy.
In another version, the watchers get sick of dealing with Tommy and send him back to the Dream SMP. At that point, he’s been missing for roughly 5 months so wilbur is pretty shocked to see him. However, the Watchers erased all of his memories of the past 5 months. And that includes memories of Tubbo.
In the last version, the Watchers wiped all of Tommy’s memories and put them in Tubbo. So now Tommy has zero memory of anything and Tubbo has gone slightly insane from the overwhelming amount of memories.

Nona as a Watcher AU?
thank you! ha, I actually get to use some of the game I started with Nona!
- she has the same backstory, but rather than remain in Aedyr long enough for the LK to show up and recruit her she went to the Dyrwood to try and start a new life, and possibly even bring more Woedican worship to a place where it’s not really encouraged
- there’s a lot of inner conflict about fighting back against the LK once she realizes they serve Woedica, too. Even after everything, she still sends the souls to Woedica at the end of the game
- her favorite companion is Kana, and they have long in-depth discussions about history and culture
- speaking of history and culture, she loves restoring Caed Nua and once she becomes the Lady of the keep she quickly gains a reputation for supporting knowledge and diplomacy
- in-game I did keep Aloth around because I’ve never had him go pro-LK and I’m curious what that would look like if I carry this game over to Deadfire...but realistically Nona would not trust him after his confession. Maybe the in-universe reason for him staying is that she still thinks he can be useful? It’s not even the lying that bothers her the most, really; she just thinks his loyalties are swayed too easily
