I feel like we’re ignoring the potential of online forms having a literal SUMBIT button
“Okay! Great, now, you’ll just have to fill out this questionnaire and then we can get started. Remember to be honest with your answers.” The man smiled, a little too wide, gesturing to the computer in front of you.
You nodded. You really needed this job, and if the last hurdle in your way was a simple questionnaire? Well, you’d crush it.
The man, your future employer, stepped away as you began to fill out the questions.
Name. Age. Date of birth. Today’s date.
How did you hear about this job?
A friend of a friend, you wrote. Word of mouth.
Why do you want to work here?
You typed the word money, stifled a snort, before deleting it. This company is up and coming, a place to grow and learn with the company.
Do you work best managing yourself or being managed by others?
Definitely myself, you thought, before typing that you like a mix of both. That’s what employers want to hear, right?
No you don’t. Do you work best managing yourself or being managed by others?
What…? You scrolled to the other questions. They all read the exact same thing:
Do you work best managing yourself or being managed by others?
Creepy. Was someone watching the answers be filled in? You flushed at your fake answer earlier. Had they seen you type that?
Just to be safe, you wrote managed by others in the box. You scrolled to the next question.
It was now a video. How many workplace violations do you see in the above clip?
You breathed a slight sigh of relief at the normalcy of the question, and clicked play. It showed an office interior, with things like messy desks, a guy hitting a printer that wouldn’t work, and screens that were way too bright.
You began to type, watching the video to make sure you didn’t miss anything. Yeah, those screens were ridiculously bright, and the screensavers were sort of distracting. You didn't even glance at the keyboard as you typed out your answers.
Next question: Which of these is the appropriate work uniform?
Obviously not the maid outfit. Man, this was too easy. You clicked the suit and tie.
Incorrect. Which of these is the appropriate work uniform?
You watched as the mouth slowly moved towards the maid outfit. What the hell? You clicked the suit and tie image again. The screen flashed.
Incorrect. Which of these is the appropriate work uniform?
You looked around for the guy who led you in here earlier. Was this a joke? Some sort of prank? The job listing was real, the company was too — you'd researched them before applying.
You clicked on the maid outfit just to see if it would let you move on.
It did.
Good. The word sent a jolt through your spine. It was a pleasant but strange sensation. Click the following that applies to you:
I am a hard worker.
I am well motivated.
I always obey.
I am a good listener.
I want to sink.
The words began to swim in front of your eyes. Hazy. You shook your head, scrolling back up. Had all of the questions been this strange? You couldn't quite remember at this point. You skimmed through them, but it was your answers that made you stop.
Name: Toy.
Why do you want to work here? I want to obey. I want to obey. I want to obey. I want to obey. I want to obey. I want to obey. I want to obey.
How many workplace violations do you see in the above clip? Too many. The toys should be watching the video. They should be in uniform. They should be feeling good. Good toys make more good toys. They sink. They drift. They drop.
Everything was spinning now. You scrolled back down to see you'd answered all the questions.
All that was left to do was SUBMIT.
