Our rest lies in looking to the Lord, not to ourselves.
Watchman Nee
I live 15 minutes from a Christian book store.
It’s a great place. Only issue is that it has more books written by “Watchman Nee and Witness Lee” than it does regular and popular Christian theological texts. Books glorifying Israel, books demonizing most denominations. The books by Nee and Lee are pretty much doctrinal, so this bookstore has its own doctrine and some of it is separate from mainline Christian beliefs.
And the staff is VERY odd. I told them I was a youth pastor, and they said “oh are they regenerated into the church?” And I said “Regenerated? Uhm” and they said “like were they born into the church or did they regenerate?”
And I just hit her with the stare.
Finally, they asked where I went to church and I told them, and they told me it was “time to leave” so… yeah.
Edit: I forgot about this, but they’ll table at the Blue line, gave me and my ex a bible and took my phone number down. They called me NON-STOP for weeks trying to get me to come to church. I’ve talked to missionaries at other churches before, I have friends who are missionaries, but these people would not take no for an answer.
It’s an interesting time, if anyone is in Chicago wants to visit, let me know.
"Nothing shallow can ever touch the depths, nor can anything superficial touch the inward parts. Only the deep will respond to the deep. Anything that does not issue from the depths cannot touch the depths. Others can respond deep within to only what issues from deep within us....If nothing comes from the depths, the help we receive is just superficial."
Watchman Nee
(Psalm 42:7, Mark 4:5-6)
Idk, I think this hit me today because I get impatient sometimes that God doesn't swoop in and immediately fix the situations I'm praying for, and the people I'm praying for don't see immediate transformation. But I'm praying for them from my depths, from my spiritual roots, and that means God is working in their spiritual roots, so of course we don't see immediate superficial change. The root has to be strong for the plant to grow.
If you would test the character of anything, you only need to enquire whether that thing leads you to God or away from God.
Watchman Nee
"God makes it quite clear in His Word that He has only one answer to every human need - His Son, Jesus Christ."
“There is no limit to the grace is willing to bestow upon us. He will give us everything, but we will receive none of it except as we rest in him. ‘Sitting’ is an attitude of rest. Something has been finished, work stops, and we sit. It is paradoxical, but true, that we only advance in the Christian life as we learn first of all to sit down.” -Watchman Nee

"according to later tradition, mary, having spent her life after pentecost supporting and serving the nascent church, was living in the house of the apostle john, in jerusalem, when the archangel gabriel revealed to her that her death would occur three days later. the apostles, scattered throughout the world, are said to have been miraculously transported to be at her side when she died. the sole exception was thomas, who was preaching in India. he is said to have arrived in a cloud above her tomb exactly three days after her death, and to have seen her body leaving to heaven. he asked her 'where are you going, o holy one?', at which she took off her girdle and gave it to him saying 'receive this my friend', after which she disappeared. thomas was taken to his fellow apostles, whom he asked to see her grave, so that he could bid her goodbye. mary had been buried in gethsemane, according to her request. when they arrived at the grave, her body was gone, leaving a sweet fragrance. an apparition is said to have confirmed that christ had taken her body to heaven after three days to be reunited with her soul" ... wikipedia
