MDZS fandom enthusiastically assumes the watchtowers to be a positive acquisition because of the friendly narration from Wei Wuxian's idealistic point of view.

While I get the creeps.

The Berlin Wall was 140 kilometres (87 mi) long.

Also since, back then, the LanlingJin Sect’s leadership wasn’t as powerful, the matter wasn’t seen as important, and nothing ended up happening. After Jin GuangYao officially succeeded the position of Sect Leader and became the Chief Cultivator, he immediately gathered people and resources from the sects, and started to carry out his past goals. In the beginning, the voices of opposition were deafening. A lot of people suspected that the LanlingJin Sect used it to gain personal benefits and stuff its own pockets. With a smiling face, Jin GuangYao persisted for five years. During the years, he allied but also fell out with countless people. Using both gentle and forceful methods, he did all that he could and what he wished for was finally completed. More than twelve hundred “lookout towers” had been built. These “lookout towers” were scattered around the more remote places. Every one of them were assigned disciples from certain sects. If anything strange happened, they’d take action at once. When they couldn’t deal with the matter, they’d send out messages to other sects or rogue cultivators for help. Even if the cultivators who came wanted something in return while the locals were too poor to give them any, the money that the LanlingJin Sect gathered throughout each year would be enough to support them. West of the road were flint hills, grey and rugged, with tall watchtowers on their stony summits.

To the east the land was lower, the ground flattening to a rolling plain that stretched away as far as the eye could see.

Stone bridges spanned swift, narrow rivers, while small farms spread in rings around holdfasts walled in wood and stone. The road was well trafficked, and at night for their comfort there were rude inns to be found.

Three days’ ride from Winterfell, however, the farmland gave way to dense wood, and the kingsroad grew lonely.

The flint hills rose higher and wilder with each passing mile, until by the fifth days they had turned into mountains, cold blue-grey giants with jagged promontories and snow on their shoulders.

When the wind blew from the north, long plumes of icy crystals flew from the high peaks like banners.

Lithuania 2016. US forces take a short rest after a urban warfare training with the Lithuanian army. In 2016 I went with my big love and expert reporter Prune Antoine #plumaberlin and Gil Skorwid on a research trip about the remilitarisation of the Kaliningrad region for #Mediapart and later won the #prixchaffajon for multimedia reportage. After two days we got kicked out of Kaliningrad by the secret service who followed us all the time because we had no proper journalist Visa. So we went on to Lithuania and Poland who are direct neighbours to Russia / Kaliningrad. Both were afraid of what was coming after the annexation of Crimea. Poland built surveillance towers along the whole border of Kaliningrad and has military units stationed near the border. Lithuania just introduced conscription under President Dalia Grybauskaitė. The film maker Aleksandras Matonis restaged the battle of Kalniske between the NKDW forces and Lithuanian partisans after WW2 to reshape Lithuanian fighting spirit because history books said Lithuanian lost drastically which he thought to be a Russian myth. The US Army had a training center for the Lithuanian army and the NATO has their quick response air force stationed in the Baltic states. They reported daily flights from russian mainland to Kaliningrad without transponder so they had to scramble their fighters to check every flight. But nobody knew what’s inside Kaliningrad. And this enclave is in missile range of a lot of the mayor cities of Europe. It has been 6 years now and all of a sudden all the fears become real in #Ukraine.
