Trying to remember a few ways my campaigns (as a player) started: You have been recruited as adventurers by adventurer city You are escorting a cart (oh no an attack!) You just got exiled and if you don't have a group you will definitely die You woke up in a new land after dying, bound together magically You have all answered a job board The way I'm starting my next campaign: it is evening. The town bells ring - an attack! (you all happen to be in the same area).

Yeah, many ppl use the “SUDDENLY, AN ATTACK!”. I feel like that probably works well with the typical adventure-type characters, but I don’t really have those in my party ;) When I start my campaign I might keep you guys posted on how it’s going :D

@water1wolf "erotic hypnosis" could also be a fully consensual thing, like taking drugs or whatever to alter your state so you're more into/able to do whatever it is you want to. If that were the case though I guess anon would have stated more details. Like who is being hypnotised and why (it can be as a blocker for trauma, but not sure)

It’s weird, because I see the “purpose” of consequences to be to stop someone doing a thing again. And Caleb really ain’t going to do that again, even if he were placed in the same position, so there’s really not much point in punishing. At the same time, I’m interested in the idea of taking responsibility to prevent it happening again on a wider scale (by, say, ponching the guy who pushed them to that)

This is another interesting perspective! If that is the “purpose” of consequences, then you’re right, not much point to more of them for him. Perhaps it’s better to overall frame this as about “responsibility,” both in the sense of the unhealthy amount Caleb places on himself, and what actually moving forward would look like.
