“The Coldest Winter” by Jack Waterlot for Models.com, 2016.
Waterlot Completed 1675- started 1670- staircase is same as it was-never changed It feels a little fake here- a little too perfect- reminds me of the bayou sense in Princess and the Frog Jazz music plays-none of the classics- soft in the background Waiter- warm laugh- bit of a fake accent- he pushes it probably to show the authenticity of the place- strong shapely eyebrows- bushy and thick- accentuate the whites in his eyes- he's average everywhere else- but his eyes are warm yet piercing Fake antique everything- seems like they tried to make it look vintage almost Fireplace when you first walk in Juxtaposition of the family next to us- 3 kids- 2 girls, 1 boy- littlest girl, curly hair crazy purple glasses a smile to die for. They're dressed for the occasion but she wears the purple glasses that look like goggles. She bounces all around the place. The adults- all dressed in stuffy suits or smooth satin dresses pretend to ignore the child- try not to look at her cherub cheeks and rosebud face- too afraid to crack a smile at her because they know they'd unravel on the spot causing their priggish appearances melting away. Light streams through the window- hitting the family and me- everyone else shifts to avoid the light in their eyes- I sit here and watch, observe, bask in the glory that is the joy of this family and mostly- the little girl The boy wears the nicest clothes out of all of them- he sits well mannered- but itching to play with his sisters- the eldest sister wears a blue cover up and white sunglasses on her head- she hugs her sister and plays with her- but it's clear she has the smartest head on her shoulders- she is the most centered The parents look exhausted- the mother has a haggard smile and tough leathery skin but it's obvious her heart is in a good place- she is at the end of her wits though The father- burly and unshaven- his tattoos a show and his collared shirt unbutton pays no attention to his children and hardly speaks- eyeing his wife every now and again- he's strong- he makes that obvious with his rough movements and constant fists- but I like to believe he's a real softy with his kids- he definitely feels embarrassed, like he knows his family doesn't belong, but he's not looking to alter his family to be here They're bright- maybe it's just the sunshine- but there is something about this family that makes them radiate "What do you mean 'man-up'? You can't help the chills!"
