#nofilter These softwood #douglasfir floors came out great using #waterlox These photos are after the initial drying of layers 4-7 but that’s going with thin layers. Next time I may use a new applicator for each layer and go thicker to possibly reduce the number of layers needed down to 4-5. I’ll have to get better before photos on the the next room I finish. These floors were really bad starting off. This tung oil varnish is less scratch resistant than the typical floor poly used but it makes up for it in repair-ability. Spot repairs are possible unlike typical water or oil based poly. All it takes to renew the overall finish is cleaning the surface and applying more varnish. Typically poly has to be completely sanded off and completely reapplied. This waterlox costs a lot more initially and takes longer to both apply and cure/dry but once completed should cost less in the long run. Another benefit is that other than the initial evaporation of the solvents it’s a very #sustainable #green natural product compared to a poly finish that is a layer of basically plastic. It also looks amazing compared to what a poly finish would. I don’t think I’d have much luck offering this floor refinishing technique through the buisness. It would be over $10/sqft rehabbing a similar floor to the same level of detail used here. (at Amsterdam, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0cfCQaAD11/?igshid=1ir0en7ok62j2
This floor refinishing project seems to be coming out nice. Radiators we’re temporarily pulled out instead of sanding around them. Naturally a generous amount of wood filler was used as an air-sealing measure prior to the last couple sanding passes. Why refinish floors without getting a little extra performance out of the house. #waterlox #airsealing #homeperformance #hydronicheating (at Amsterdam, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs0jQUcg5Pk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5fkhhd3iw3k3
Got the first coat of finish on the pedalboard. This stuff is expensive, but came highly recommended. #diy #stain #finish #pedalporn #wood #woodwork #cherry #waterlox
First coat of sealer on the #butcherblock countertops #waterlox #diy
The master bath countertop.
We started with a big hunk of ash. Then planed it down to 3"x25"x8ft and added a matching 6" false front. The effect is a solid slab of 6" thick wood "floating" 32″ above the marble floor.
Next we gave it three coats of WaterLox to enhance and water seal (personally, I liked the lighter look, perhaps we should have bleached it first). I then did a light 320 grit sanding. And then a fourth coat of Waterlox. The result was smooth as glass.
Then we propped up it in the bath to ensure it would be mounted at the correct height -- the vessel sinks and wall faucet hardware helped narrow it’s position to within and inch.
Setting it in place was harder than expected. Although we measured the length many times to ensure a tight fit, the top turned out to be 1/8" off square. So it was easier to rip the drywall on one side than cut an 1/8″ off a 4″ thick slab.
