I think the byline of the ad was “Sink’er there, pardner!”, referring to an oil well test hole. The view from the ground up: Tom Williamson practicing water-witching in the early 80s. Dowsing is such a strange niche of esotericism, in that practitioners straddle the occult and science in ways you don’t typically expect from other ritual practice. And it can get results, so much so that the US government received so many letters about it the Department of the Interior was compelled to issue a manual outlining the practice while sidestepping its total endorsement, instead directing people to a handy and exhaustive bibliography of historical works on the subject to find out more for themselves. Snapped a shot of this beautiful piece while I had it out for framing. These old French magazines—I think this one is Le Petit Journal—have such gorgeous cover graphics. They show a lot of death, murder, dismemberment, and animal attacks, and while that’s great and all, it was nice to run into a topical piece for display.
