I’ve read the whole Holmes canon several times and seen many screen adaptations, despite which - or, perhaps, because of which - the particulars of some stories may escape me. Today Holmes wasn’t the only one caught by surprise by Watson, reviewing for him the newspapers’ most recent stories on the imminently expected celebrity client:

“... Two days later--that is, on Wednesday last--there is a curt announcement that the wedding had taken place, and that the honeymoon would be passed at Lord Backwater's place, near Petersfield. Those are all the notices which appeared before the disappearance of the bride."

"Before the what?" asked Holmes with a start.
