"I Am Poured Out Like Water" by Wayne R. Smith
This is one of the first prose stories of his that Wayne ever showed me, back around 1990 or not long after. This version is the one he last edited on 16 January 2019, with a few minor edits by me. From cues such as the reference to the Piper Aviation factory, I surmise it was set in Lock Haven, PA, where Wayne went to college. -- E. J. Barnes, literary executor
Thanks to everyone who donated to the GoFundMe to cover my late colleague Wayne R. Smith’s funeral and probate expenses. As it turns out, the balance on his cremation turned out to be less than was originally quoted, so while we fell short of our original target, we still raised enough to cover everything. Big virtual hugs to everyone! To close this series of works that Wayne and I produced together -- his scripts, my art -- I post here a couple of editorial cartoons, and a full-color one-page comic. Backtracking a little in time here, to 1992. This two-page comic was written by the late Wayne R. Smith (@iwayray), penciled by me, and inked (after rearranging the panels) by Myke Maldonado, another member of Shoptalk/No Name APA. Myke has the originals (somewhere); these are photos of copies. This demonstrates why, though DuoShade was popular with illustrators in the early ‘90s, it died out before Zip-a-Tone did: It ages faster. “Little Hitler” is the oldest comic I’ve been able to find that I drew based on a script by Wayne R. Smith (23 Nov 1959--17 Mar 2020). It’s undated, but likely 1989 -- certainly no later than 1990. If it’s after 1988, it would have been after the two of us moved from ChiAPA to Shoptalk (later No Name) APA. The primary target of the satire here is Harvey Comics’s cartoon characters making traditionally sinister figures -- Wendy the Good Little Witch, Hot Stuff the Little Devil, and arguably not only Casper the Friendly Ghost, but possibly Richie Rich as well -- ultra-cute, the American version of Chibi/Kawaii aesthetic. I remember having a lot of fun drawing this one. Admittedly, it was a lot funnier at a time when most of us felt safe assuming that the neo-Nazi movement was of insignificant influence in American politics.

I first "met" Wayne Smith in the pages of Maurice Forrester's ChiAPA, a comics creators' amateur press association, and we both moved to Hector Diaz's Shoptalk (later No Name) APA when ChiAPA went on hiatus.
I wound up drawing several short comics pieces based on scripts Wayne had written, including a three-pager that was published in Issue #3 of Gauntlet: Exploring the Limits of Free Expression (1992).
I continued to be in touch with Wayne after he switched to prose writing, often reading pieces he sent me for my comments.
Wayne had a rough life, and I can see how he might have given up home. But that life ended too soon.
