I Do Not Need Open Eyes To See
I sing with the windows open
So no one can come in and see me
But still my voice may be heard outside
I dress with the lights turned off
So not even I can see me before
I am covered up from toe to head
And then I can marvel at my good luck
I write with my headphones in
Whether music is playing or not
Like some literary device that cuts me off
And gives me clarity in thought
I drink with the label torn off
So I'm not reminded by name
Of how drunk I am getting despite
How well I know I'm getting drunk
And I read only dust jacketless hardcovers
So I can't judge by the cover
And I can appreciate something for its word alone
Unlike the way I handle myself
I see others with the lights turned on
Doors and windows open too
Sometimes removing skin and reaching for the soul
Because to it I've become attuned
I see myself with all the lights half dimmed
And doors and windows shut and locked
Inside a room that is all mirrors at odd angles
So I can scream and break them all and still see
But I sing with the windows open
So someone might hear me feel
And maybe if I stopped singing
You would knock on my door
