THE INTERVIEW.
What’s your family like? Are you still close, or have you blocked all their numbers?
“It’s still just mama and baba here in America with me. I have some cousins, aunts, and uncles back in Greece, but unless I’m visiting the islands, we only get in touch for holidays or birthdays. I left my parents back in upstate New York. I miss them, often. Mama calls a few times each week, tells me about the latest gossip from coffee hour at church, or the food she’s near-constantly making. Baba checks in less frequently, but then, he’s always been the quieter one of the two of them. I love them. I know they love me. And I know they know something went wrong, back when I was young. Especially my father—he’s quite shrewd. But I’ve never confided in them. There’s a gap as wide as the continental U.S. between us, and at this point, I don’t have a will to fill it.”
We’ve all had our fair share of shit hit the fan and moments in the sun — tell me about a defining moment in your life, good or bad.
(TW: war, guns, blood) “The loss of a loved one prompted me to drop out of college and enlist in the army when I was 19. Thinking I could make a difference. Thinking the structure and routine would do me some good. Not caring if I lived or died, quite honestly. I lived, which I’m thankful for now, but I’ll never forget all I witnessed while I was deployed. The memories were a barrage at first, but they’ve drawn together into a singular mass over the years—more slug than buckshot now. It happens when I’m driving, and see a pothole in the road in the shape of a buried device. It freezes me at the sight of blood or the pressure of a crowd at my back. It disallows sleep more often than I’d like to admit (and believe me, sleep was already hard to come by before). I was someone else when I returned, for better or for worse.”
Do you have any regrets? What are they?
“I’ve been in love—madly, dizzyingly in love—exactly twice. By circumstance, I never went through with marrying either of them. At least, not in all the ways I once dreamed. If I could stand before you today as a married man, I would. In a heartbeat.”
