this whole time, sakura doesn't even know that the reason suo dipped without saying anything to him (or even About him for that matter) is because he's the one thing that could crumble his resolve.

Hey, so—what if I lost my shit here, once and for all? Let's go through a list of Best Of Buds™ things that Sakura could be saying here, and what the JP original would then have to look like:

"I've always respected/admired/trusted you" → Ore wa omae wo

"I've always thought of you as _____" → Ore wa omae (no koto) wo

"I've always looked for/chased after/etc. you" → Ore wa omae wo

Something about how Sakura needs Suo? That would have to be "Ore ni wa omae ga"

Like do you see what I mean. I'm not one to speculate about stuff like this (cos I hate being wrong aha) but with today's chapter, I'm just sitting here like What!!!

I'm also so curious as to whether the translation team get any insight into what Nii-sensei means for Sakura to say here. Cos "ore wa omae ga" could honestly end in a lot of ways, it's such an incomplete blank canvas of a phrase in Japanese and yet the English TL feels so...sure, in the direction that it's taking. Rather than the JP raw on its own, it's really a combination of the JP + the translation choices made by the ENG team that's making me look at this like it's the nuclear bomb to my coughing fujo baby.

By the way, if the thing Sakura was saying was "I like/love you?" The JP for it would go something like: Ore wa omae ga...

sorry, just one more thing. had to read the original jp so the knife could lodge into my chest better but this line

the JP reads:

「心が繋がったと思える人が出来たんだと思う」

"He found someone with whom he could think he was connected to, heart to heart."

once again, not a mistranslation + still feels faithful to the original, definitely no worries about censorship or anything. translation is just a painfully imperfect thing.

anyway, the tiny difference in nuance i wanted to point out is that while the English TL ends up reading with an emphasis on the "he thought" part like he thought he'd found someone, the JP reads with a far bigger focus on the fact that Sakura was able to feel that way with Suo. That Suo was someone who managed to bring out that feeling in him.

and i'm just a little dazed and lost and sad about it is all.

i can already guess where discourse might go this week so let me just pre-emptively say: i am not going to be approaching the red chanpuru in bad faith Or thinking any less favorably of them until we get actual scenes of them doing actively fucked up shit 😭

an organisation that seems to be in charge of the protection and wellbeing of a multicultural town, consisting almost entirely of 1st and 2nd generation immigrants, being cagey and protective abt one of its core members and keeping outsiders away from its residential area is not even unreasonable.

and if red chanpuru is fucked up for having a 15 year old as one of its chief officers, the Entire Town of Makochi had to be singlehandedly rehabilitated by a 15 year old Umemiya so let's not lose sight of that 😭

i have no doubt i'll still want suo to leave RC. i have no doubt he'll probably be better off without all this resting on his shoulders! but by god, i simply will not have this group be villainised so vehemently when we haven't even seen them do anything so far. other than be wary of outsiders, mediate arguments, and be nice to the fucking kids in town.

i'm sure there are structural problems to address with the RC but that doesn't automatically translate to them being violently abusive and criminal. nor do they have to be for Suo to want/have a different life for himself, one that actually belongs to him.

is the idea of feeling eternally indebted and therefore chained to an organisation that gave you shelter, food, and protection, not compelling enough? for any form of self-oriented thought or action to feel like a betrayal to the people that provided for you all your life—is that not stifling enough?

now, is there a Possibility that the RC is actually a horrible, morally bankrupt organisation that Does abuse its members? of course there is. but my goodness, ever since they've been introduced, i feel like people have almost been thirsting for reasons to think the worst of them and i just don't get it.

i don't know if it's like remnants of fan theories where we were all expecting the absolute Worst™ but we're not in fanon territory anymore. RC has its secrets but if there's been any foreshadowing in the past so many chapters that they're actually this big bad evil that beats children into submission or whatever the fuck—cos that's genuinely how people talk about them sometimes—then i simply fail to see it. and i'm a bit sick of it all tbh!!

sorry i know we still don't even know shit about shit but i think i was just hit with the full force of what (and how Much rather) suo was trying to protect his friends from, and it's making me feel irreparably sad like. he would rather allow himself to have the most heartbreaking farewell with a friend than even entertain the idea of exposing them to the same ugly he's lived with for at least a few years now. i want to rip the world apart and stitch it back together differently so that this pain never even seems like an option to him. what the fuck.
