Chenford + accidental love confession in heated moment.
He's pretty sure they're not getting out of here.
Lucy’s breath is harsh against his neck, and as quiet as he can tell she’s trying to stay, she’s whimpering at a high enough pitch that he can hear it clearly over the flare of enemy fire happening outside the door. He’s not sure if she’s bleeding, or he’s bleeding, or both, maybe? Either way, she’d done well to pull them into a sealed off room, bracing herself against the door so they’d had the opportunity to regroup...but things had shifted quickly, and instead of sneaking out of here, they were going to wind up cornered.
He shuts his eyes and slides his arm around her waist, her duty belt digging into his as he pulls her against his chest. “Listen to me,” he whispers, and he hears her try to respond. Tim shakes his head. “Don’t talk, just listen to me.”
Lucy nods and he looks down at her, feeling her tip her face up to look at him. “We’re going to figure this out,” he lies, and Lucy’s eyes widen as she shakes her head, a hand coming up to her mouth. “Yes, we are.”
“No,” she manages, her voice shaking. “No, we’re not.”
Tim rolls his eyes, feeling oddly calm as he surveys her face slowly. “Always the contrarian,” he mumbles, his fingers brushing along the curve of her back. Lucy leans into his touch and he pretends he can’t see the tears on her cheeks.
She wipes at her eyes, straightening her spine. “We’re going to figure it out,” she repeats back to him, and Tim nods down at her.
“And when we do, we’re going to get you better at lying.”
Lucy grumbles, shaking her head as she frowns at him. “I lie just fine, thanks.”
“Sure,” Tim nods, watching as she shuts her eyes at a set of heavy footsteps passes the closed door they’re pressed against. “You keep telling yourself that.” He’s pretty sure he hears it against his chest, but he’s listening for other things in the moment – their backup, primarily – so when she lifts her head up and raises her brow, he presses his lips together in confusion. “What?”
Lucy rolls her eyes at him, but takes a slow, shaky breath. “Just in case we don’t figure it out,” she says, enunciating her words in a way that proves she’s already said it, once, “I love you.”
Tim swallows, nodding slowly. He leans down, pressing his forehead to hers for a long second and he feels her sag into him, overwhelmed. “Yeah,” he breathes, with a soft laugh. “I love you, too.” She’s crying, but it almost feels like a laugh. “I need you focused,” he tips her face up, raising his brows, “okay?”
She schools her features, her eyes creasing at the corners as she nods. “We’ll talk about it later,” she swallows, turning away from him and pressing her ear to the door.
