A guide to the KSL teams and why you should/shouldn’t support each one
Hello hello hello! The Kia Super League begins on Sunday and it’s the biggest one yet with both teams playing each other home and away for the first time this year. The women’s international season is over now in England and there aren’t a great deal of fixtures for any team now until the T20 World Cup comes around in November, so this is a biggie. And the teams are a bit different here too, not all along the traditional county lines, so here’s a handy guide if you want a team to support...
Recent internationals: Kate Cross, Alex Hartley, Sophie Ecclestone, Dani Hazell
One to watch: Emma Lamb
Why you should support them: Have a bowling attack full of England stars, with Ecclestone fresh off an outstanding international summer. The batting has been bolstered by overseas signings. And who doesn’t love the Cross/Hartley combo?
Why you shouldn’t support them: Have finished bottom of the pile in the first two seasons despite a core group who have had a lot of success in county cricket in the last couple of years.
Loughborough Lightning
Overseas players: Elyse Villani, Sophie Devine, Rachael Haynes
Recent internationals: Jenny Gunn, Georgia Elwiss, Amy Jones
One to watch: Sarah Glenn
Why you should support them: A team with the least direct connection to a county side who have really managed to build up a fanbase, which is itself pretty cool. Sophie Devine has been in great form on her English venture so far, plus you have Jenny Gunn’s slower-than-a-slower-ball, the whiff.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Bowling might be a bit light, and that’s often what wins you matches in this format. Have a solid England trio but perhaps without the ‘x factor’ of others around the country.
Southern Vipers
Overseas players: Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, Mignon du Preez
Recent internationals: Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt, Tash Farrant, Katie George
One to watch: Katie George
Why you should support them: Once again their lineup looks to be the strongest in the competition, with a batting lineup that is Absolutely Stacked and former internationals like Arran Brindle and Sara McGlashan also in the squad. George has impressed whilst starting to break into the England side this summer and will be trying to nail down a spot in that WT20 squad.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Are they a bit too good? They’ll definitely be the team the others are looking to beat.
Surrey Stars
Overseas players: Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk, Lizelle Lee
Recent internationals: Nat Sciver, Laura Marsh, Sarah Taylor, Bryony Smith
One to watch: Bryony Smith
Why you should support them: Worth supporting for watching Taylor’s glovework alone, plus have another genuine England superstar with Nat Sciver, inventor of the Natmeg. Also feature a very strong South African trio which includes the Kapp/DvK power couple.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Though Taylor has joined, have been weakened to an extent by the loss of Beaumont and Hartley from the previous years. And though they came second in the group stage and qualified for finals day last year, have arguably underperformed so far in the competition.
Recent internationals: Heather Knight, Anya Shrubsole, Fran Wilson
One to watch: Freya Davies
Why you should support them: Last years winners, with World Cup heroes Knight and Shrubsole among the biggest draws. Have an exciting group of overseas players, Priest having a lot to prove to the NZ selectors and well, everything Taylor has touched at Storm has turned to gold.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Another of those teams that all the others will be looking to beat, like Vipers having won and come second in the competition’s first two years.
Recent internationals: Katherine Brunt, Lauren Winfield, Beth Langston, Alice Davidson-Richards
One to watch: Katie Levick
Why you should support them: Katherine Brunt is a sheer force of nature, and has developed into a genuine all rounder in her thirties. Though not a squad littered with stars, they have the potential to be a surprise package with a good blend of experience, overseas batsmen, and county stalwarts such as Levick.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Have finished fifth out of six in both seasons so far, and will be the underdogs again based on squads alone.

Finally sorted out my photos from the KSL game between Surrey Stars and Yorkshire Diamonds. Favourites are number 4 - Rene Farrell dismissing her international teammate Alex Blackwell, and number 7 of Cordelia Griffith.
The Women's Cricket Super League starts today, but it's not on TV or online as far as I can tell and that makes me sad. Although given that there's a team playing at my old university, I'm really tempted to go and watch a match.
