Pretty, perhaps, but delicate. At fourteen, she’s a mere wisp of a girl, dark hair and a pale complexion that’s seen one too many sleepless nights.
Still, she pastes on a smile when addressed by the seamstress’ husband. It has the tight, self-conscious look of an expression well practiced, and is far too measured for someone of her age, but it’s a smile nonetheless. She’s been told that a pretty smile can get a girl far in life. She’s yet to see that proven, of course – but if there’s any truth to it at all, she’ll grit her teeth and keep smiling as best she can. As the girl with little more than the clothes on her back and a younger brother in tow, she doesn’t have much other choice.
“Vous êtes trop amiable, monsieur.”
He’s a tall man, Monsieur Dubois. He might’ve even been handsome, once, with the sort of blonde hair and broad shoulders that a girl could swoon over. But now that hair is peppered with grey, and not even broad shoulders could make up for an evident gut. He smiles at Nadine, and even when she drops her gaze down to the sock she’s stitching, she can feel him watching her. She doesn’t like Monsieur Dubois. He holds her eye too long; his touch is too heavy and too familiar. When he comes around to peer at over her shoulder at her work, he stands close enough that his breath tickles the back of her neck. Nadine continues stitching.
It’s not the first time he’s pushed boundaries. No, the first time was the week after she started working for Madame Dubois – when his hand grazed her shoulder in a seemingly innocent gesture of approval, quickly soured when his touch wandered to her bum. She jerked away instinctively. Maybe he didn't notice, or maybe he mistook her denial for a challenge, but Monsieur Dubois only smiled – redoubled his efforts. And continued those efforts whenever the Madame was gone and the shop was quiet. At least until last week, when Nadine's polite smiles finally ran dry. She figured a shove to the man's chest might communicate her discomfort better.
The welt on her cheek from that stunt hasn’t healed entirely yet. Nor the crack in her lip, nor the purplish bruises that bloom up her forearms. Nor has she forgotten his pointed reminder of all the other ratty little girls that would do just about anything for a job like this. Anything, indeed.
So when he sits next to her now, she simply grits her teeth and thinks about the pastry she’s going to buy Eliot at the end of the week. He drapes one arm across the back of her chair. She takes out her scissors to snip the end of a thread. His hand comes to rest on her thigh, and she only grips them harder. When his hand wanders beneath her skirt, fingers bold and invasive, she imagines what those rusty scissors might look like embedded in his neck.
He tugs at her panties, and the scissors find his arm instead. Again, and again, and again, until her hands are stained with blood and he wrenches the makeshift weapon away from her. When Madame Dubois comes into the room, he has her against the wall; hands wrapped around that pretty little neck.
That’s more or less the end of her career as a seamstress.
