I did more temperance and prohibition research today. Specifically, I looked into the history of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The WCTU began as the women’s branch of the Prohibition Party. It was founded in 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio. Helen L. Bullock started Elmira’s chapter in 1886. This photo is of the Ninth Annual Convention of the Young People’s Branch (YPB) of the WCTU in front of the Park Church in Elmira in 1918. The YPB was made up of youths who were fourteen years old and older. The younger children standing at the front of group are members of the Loyal Temperance Legion whose members were as young as six years old.
