The desert never seemed so peaceful until he walked out into the sands with Fareeha. Dunes dipped and rose in a rhythmic fashion, stretching as far as the eye can see. His feet sink, warming in the sand, looking up at the sun with a deeply solemn gaze. He didn’t think anything could shake it, but as their walk continues, his mind becomes more free, slowly breathing away all his troubles for the moment. 

Fareeha has been talking, but not in a way to coax any response from him. She talks about her childhood, her security training, how much she loved her home. He listens despite his silence. 

They stop at an oasis. Fareeha kneels down to drink, looking back to him with a twitch of her lips, “My mother - she did this exact thing with me, you know that?” 

He says nothing. She offers her canteen to him. 

Sometimes all you need is someone beside you.
