We-media reflects the weakness of online journalism and media
The popularity of online and social media keep rising because of the advanced technology. Facebook, Twitter, Blogger and Tumblr (which I am using right now) have become a platform for people to write stories and express themselves. Thus, it creates and leads to the rise of we-media as well. However, its credibility is always being criticized.
What is We-media and how it influences our industry?
We-media, a new term in the online journalism industry, refers to the generalisation of online media which allows everyone to become a communicator to deliver normative or non-normative information to individuals and media group.
What it means is everyone could be an online journalist and publish news. You could be a we-media practitioner as long as you familiar with the internet, love to spread and write stories.
Unfortunately, this kind of media is not really ‘evangelic’ for the industry of online journalism since the worthless and fake information spread excessively in the online environment and so its credibility has been criticized for years.
In order to the attract audience’s attention, some of them might become ‘title party’ and produce an exaggerating title and content.
In fact, that’s a violation of being a journalist and it demonstrates one of the weaknesses of online journalism and media.
I don’t deny the value of we-media. I also admit it is a long-term media production in the online environment. It might just need to be stipulated with the basic rules of being a journalist.
