How to display weapons in your house using Mannequins
- A FFXIV Housing Guide -
Recently, @ourashenbride and I have messed around with a few designs and we discovered a neat trick that was present since the release of Mannequins: The ability to display holstered weapons. With this guide, you can see ideas to built an armory or weapon rack/display.
I used 2 mannequins and guns the picture above to demonstrate the usage. This will work with any short/small shield or gun, and also other weapons to a certain thickness. You can move the Mannequin inside a wall, where only the shield/weapon part is visible. But some great sword, axes and spears work too. The pose of the Mannequin might influence the way the weapon is tilted, but as of right now the difference is very insignificant. I’d suggest you use the arms crossed pose.
Don't forget the most important part: Hiding the tail. This is the only part of the Mannequins that will stick out below the weapon or even clips with it. In this example below, I have books hiding the tail and it looks like the shield rests on them. You can also use shelves on a certain non-grit height to make it look like the shields stand on it. Some surfaces align nicely to the height, like in this example:
Normally, you will always have the same height for weapons. Of course, the weapon size will differ and you will have to adjust to that. But you could also choose to float the Mannequin with some storage tricks, with permanent surfaces around the house, like the wooden parts of the static walls.I personally like to use the books in the picture below to hide the tail. In a cluttered/messy environment you could easily hide some bigger weapons behind those stacks of books.
Once we have different races available to use for Mannequins, the tail problem will be gone, and we can have more flexible design choices. Shame that they are not tabletop items like the ishgard stand -- that way we would have amazing weapon and armor displays! Please share your own designs, I can’t wait to see them! I only saw a few of those since the release of that feature!
