You know it's one of *those* days when you're certain the weather will act one way and make plans accordingly, then it does the complete opposite just to spite you. I Insisted that it was ok to stay indoors with the person I care for instead of going out for a walk because it was meant to be peeing it down all afternoon. It is currently insanely sunny.

Oh well... I should be grateful the opposite didn't happen and resulted in my phone getting an impromptu bath...

Farewell to summer: Wet weather alerts over thunderstorms and flooding

Flood warnings were in place across parts of Britain today as storms and rain washed away the the last vestiges of summer. There were reports of roads and properties being inundated across Surrey, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Greater London as a band of torrential rain moved in from the Channel overnight. The front brought an end to three days with temperatures of about 30C and dumped almost half a month's rain in a few hours. It prompted the Environment Agency to issue a series of flood warnings, while a yellow warning of rain is in place for much of England during Friday, rising to amber along a narrow corridor west of London.

As the storms moved in, the Met Office said 32.8mm of rain had fallen in just three hours in Farnborough, Hampshire – nearly half the 70mm average for September. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it had been called to reports of a house struck by lightning near Woking, while crews worked to pump water out of flooded premises across the county. Transport for London said two Tube stations in west London were closed due to flooding, while there were reports of disruption on the M4. Met Office meteorologist Martin Combe said: "The storms are quite slow moving so it means the amounts are starting to build up over time, so we may get higher figures and localised flooding."

Set off early, commuters warned as second wave of storms set to strike

A second round of torrential rain and flooding is expected to cause chaos during the evening rush hour after parts of the South East and London endured a deluge of water this morning. The threat of more lightning and thunderstorms prompted train companies to advise passengers to set off early on their journeys home. Red "immediate action" warnings were in place for areas of Essex and the capital after around a month's rain fell in a few hours earlier in the day. And the Environment Agency has issued seven flood warnings covering rivers in London and Essex, and about 40 flood alerts across the South East.

We strongly advise that you leave plenty of time for your journey this evening, travelling earlier where you are able. There is potential for further storms which could lead to some routes being closed

Many commuters faced a nightmare journey into work this morning, with Transport for London reporting delays and suspensions on the Tube network and other regional train services also badly affected. One passenger at Clapham Junction said platforms were a "sea of bodies" as passengers struggled to work out alternative routes. Submerged tracks and lightning strikes have caused problems to services in and out of Waterloo to southwest London, Surrey, Hampshire and Wiltshire. On the roads, the AA said floods had closed and blocked roads around the capital, including Battersea Bridge Road, Upney Road in Barking and Collier Row Road in Romford. Long delays were also reported on some sections of the M25.

Hold on to your sun hats: 27C Sunday to be hottest day of the year so far

Slap on the sun cream ... today is going to be a scorcher. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far - hotter than parts of the Mediterranean - but today is set to be even warmer. Forecasters say temperatures of 26C are "a fairly safe bet" in some parts on the country. Met office forecaster Tom Crocker said today would beat the top temperatures and most of the country will see a dry day with plenty of sunshine.

It will be warm for most places, with the highest temperature of the year so far likely across the South East at around 26C (79F).

The warm spell is in stark contrast to the cold spring and last weekend's snow flurries. Temperatures reached 24.9C in Santon Downham and Lakenheath, in Suffolk, on Saturday - but some parts of the country could see the mercury rise further today to 27C. But while those in the south east are set to enjoy the warmth of the sun today, parts of the western edge of Britain are expected to be hit by downpours. As the week progresses, temperatures are still likely to be mild but will fall day on day.

It's getting hotter by the day and punters are convinced the sunshine's here to stay all summer.

Weather alert as heavy rain and thunderstorms threaten to blight bank holiday

Wet and windy weather will blight parts of Britain today, continuing a disappointing Bank Holiday weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning in London, the east, south-east and south-west of England, alerting the public to "thundery downpours" ahead. Up to 25mm, or half a month of average rain, could fall in some areas, becoming increasingly heavy throughout the day before spreading north overnight.

The public should be aware of the risk of localised impacts from heavy rain and flooding, which may affect travel and some outdoor events. Lightning may be an additional hazard

Among the events affected will be the Notting Hill Carnival, where revellers have been warned to take umbrellas and waterproofs for a rainy edition of Europe's largest street festival today. Kent will be among the areas which sees the heaviest rain, according to weather forecasters MeteoGroup. Senior forecaster Clare Austin said. “Next week looks like an improving picture with only one or two showers around but it will be cooler."

Britain set to sizzle this weekend with temperatures to match Spain

Summery weather is forecast to return to Britain this weekend after a disappointing last few weeks in July. Temperatures are expected to climb to an above-average 28C (82.4F) on Sunday in some parts of England while Wales and Scotland will enjoy 24C (75.2F) and 22C (71.6F) respectively. Despite last month getting off to a scorching start with the hottest July day ever recorded when Heathrow sweltered in 36.7C (98F), the rest of the month was disappointing.

Saturday is probably going be the better of the two days in general across the UK.

The improved weather this weekend will be a welcome boost for those holidaying at home and parents desperate to get children outdoors during the school holidays. The sunshine will also undoubtedly be welcomed by organisers and performers at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and England's cricket team hoping to continue their winning streak against Australia in the Ashes. With temperatures expected to reach the high 20s over the weekend bookmakers have slashed their odds on August being the hottest on record in the UK. Coral has cut its odds from 3-1 to 2-1, and the firm has seen a flurry of money being bet on this month beating previous highs.
