Web Portfolio - Designers Research

I tried looking at other book cover graphic designers like Chipp Kidd and some multidisciplinary agencies like Jessica welsh. I really enjoy the side bar menu that situated on the left hand side of the website on Chip Kidd’s website. I like how his work is placed and how he only has relevant pieces displayed to visually portray his disciplinary area of work. I also looked at artists such as George Lios who is known for doing logos because I also have an interest in branding. Looking at different artists has made me seen how most have logos that are mainly type which is an approach I would like to take with my logo because it will be more open to anything. The only one that had a symbol logo was Jessica Welsh’s graphic agency that looks cursive and connects her fist letter of the name to the first letter of her last name. I think it’s really important to create a logo that’s based on the name you want people to know you by which is what I learned from doing this research. In my case, I want to only be known as Amalia because my surname ‘Girnet’ is quite had to remember and mispronounced by most. Although I would like to try and incorporate it.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed making my website and I think it displays very basic knowledge of web design and development through Wordpress, although I have managed to visually present it to match the field of practice I intend to going into. I do wish to go more towards multi disciplionary graphic design because I think right now I am exploring multiple areas that I am interested in and I do want to have a more broad range of work that will enable me to a wider customer base. I have inspired my website mostly from my favourite graphic designer of all time Chip Kidd because I think his website was more appealing to me and to the target audience I want to reach, but also because it visually represent my future aspirations. Overall, I think this was very successful and useful having the ability to own a portfolio website that can be presented to clients and graphic design companies when applying for jobs. I think in the future I will be open to experimenting with code to add certain elements and animation effects that could add some uniqueness to my portfolio so that it makes it more exciting and interesting.

Web Portfolio Development

For my website I have been very selective with the projects presented because since I am making this website to visually represent me as a book cover designer I thought it would be best to only have projects relevant to my proactive and to how I want to portray myself but this will also define what type of customers and work I am attracting. I have decided to stick to having the first letter of my name as a icon for my website. This is to build recognition and make it significant and easy to connect it to my visual identity. This way if someone sees this then they will know it;s my work. I have a short introduction of what I specialise in on the main page to make it very clear who I am and what I do. I like that I have used negative space because it makes it stand out even thought it s a very simplistic font that is used to provide information. I have managed to have the names of my projects hovering on top of the images when the mouse is anywhere near in order to save space and allow people to know the titles of my work for an insight of what it’s about.

Web Portfolio Tutorial 1&2

Over two days we had two Wordpress workshops where we have been thought the basics of how to create our own website. Downloading the Laytheme, I have been showed how to customise the theme that works on the appearance of the website such as changing logo, sidebar, menu, etc. I have learned how to add projects and how to create pages and manage what goes on the pages. I have created a main page that automatically gets you a display of projects but when you click on each one of them you have a wider gallery of the final outcomes and a short description. This is what we were thought to do in our first session. 

In the next session we learned how to integrate our logos that we came up with into our website and also learned where to place coding. We have added plug-in like the Ninja contact form which I have found really tricky because of the way you have to add the code onto the project editing  space like a text. This has given me a solid layout and ground where I can start adding my own project in.

Web Portfolio Visual identity Crit

In this crit pin up session we were split into groups where we had to judge weather or not our logos are visually representing our profession or even guess what they would visually fit. Surprisingly both of my logos have been connected to the category they fall into. For my publication logo I have gotten really good feedback, someone suggested I could experiment with printmaking and use ink in real life than scan it to have a more natural feel which would also add texture. 

For my branding logo I have gotten a lot more feedback. A lot of people have said that it looks confident and strong and professional which is what I was going for. I didn’t really get any feedback on anything that I could change to improve.  I think I would definitely use it if I was to become a freelancer.

Web Portfolio Logo Development

For my name I wanted to try having a symbol of my initials put together. However, I do enjoy a typeface logo especially since it can be more open visually freeing and could fit in with any practice I choose to go into. I really like the outline of the typeface i have done because I think it fits my personality by the width and style of strokes that’s being used. 

I designed different logos based on the career aspirations that I have. For publication I have decided to manipulate a typeface to make it look like ink and make it almost like a letterpress  style through the thick strokes. For branding i thought to go with a stylish font that is minimal and simplistic and has a professional look to it. I added in the line to evoke that if people choose to work with me they will get a high standard service. I am really inclined on the branding logo i came up with, although, i think for a book cover designer I should go for the publication one since it is what I want to do.
