The Tampa Bay Times is seeking a part-time reporter to post breaking news, police news and other news on our websites tampabay.com and tbo.com in speedy fashion during the busy morning hours. This person will be responsible for taking media alerts from local police agencies and press releases from other sources and producing accurate, clean briefs and stories on tight deadlines for tampabay.com and tbo.com. Subjects covered will range from traffic accidents and bad storms to shootings and arrests to localizing trending topics on social media or gathering information about a local event. This person will be asked to do additional reporting, mostly by phone, to flesh out developing stories. They will take feeds from other reporters and fashion those into stories or update existing stories. They will attach photos to online stories and embed links to past coverage. This person will be part of our morning web team, whose goal is to keep tampabay.com and tbo.com fresh with news and information our readers can use during the early morning hours.
HOURS: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday-Friday. It is possible for us to consider slightly different hours, or different hours on certain days if an applicant has a conflict such as a college class. But generally, you need to be available most early mornings during the week.
WORK LOCATION: Downtown St. Petersburg OR Downtown Tampa
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Accuracy. Ability to write clean, clear copy. Ability to write on deadline. Good news judgment. Some previous journalistic reporting and writing experience, either in a college or professional setting.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS: Previous work via internship or freelance with a professional news organization. Knowledge of Adobe InCopy a plus.
