Hey all, this is an interview I did with a band called Wine Field when I was a DJ and Programming Director for my college radio station, WECW. This was recorded in 1998 (my senior year) right after they played a concert in the school pub. (Yes, we had a pub...no beer, though.) They were really awesome, and I'm still surprised how good I was at interviewing them!
So, now you know why I like radio and podcasts. :)

For his Trailhead debut, James posted an appalling and intriguing story. He prefaced it with remarks on friends and college. It is true that most of us (if not all) at The Compass have wonderful friends. In honor of our good fortune, here is a song I recorded several years ago for two very important college friends. (Unfortunately, this song is also not quite safe for all ears. I attribute this to the inclusion of several low-brow inside jokes. Just a warning.)

Five of the eight contributors to The Compass graduated from Elmira College, and James has been to as many graduations as I have (four, so far). It's an important place to many of us, and I see it as one of my homes - but not because of its buildings or administration or traditions. Elmira College continues to matter so deeply to me because of the friends I made there, and how they helped me grow and become better than I was as a high school kid.
I'm incredibly lucky that I had a great group of human beings around me. I'd like to credit WECW, our college's radio station, as a major influence on that. It's where I met the majority of my underclassmen friends. (Most of the friends I made in my class lived on my floor our freshman year. Still, by graduation most of them had gotten a radio show. Some even joined the board.) This song is a tribute to two close friends that I met through WECW and their show, which they called Team Jadakiss.
Sanc and Jill were a year ahead of me, but during my junior year became a part of my family. So too did Tim, Chris, Andrew, Dave and Eric, who all appear as guests on this song. We spent weekends playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and Thursday afternoons talking about radio. There were Days of Fun and lunchtime conversations. I really looked up to Sanc. She was the General Manager of WECW, and I learned a lot from her. In fact, I probably wouldn't have looked into AmeriCorps had she not joined that organization after she graduated. Jill and I began dating in November of that year. Pretty much every time I've avoided making a silly choice when faced with a major life decision, it's been because of her wisdom.
I wrote this song towards the end of the year, when Sanc and Jill's imminent departure loomed. What would Elmira look like without these two people? It would be different, it would be sad - but I chose not to focus on that when I wrote this song. I wanted something silly and full of things that meant something to us as a group of friends. There's no need for an encomium when all you're facing is a graduation. A friend doesn't disappear because she's in another state, or if you haven't talked to her in years. I wanted to capture a little bit of that year in a song. Though you may not understand the references, I hope you felt what I was trying to convey. As James wrote yesterday, "To have wonderful people in your life is a blessing and one that I am thankful for."
