São Paulo’s WEEDEVIL Reveal ‘Profane Smoke Ritual’

Evoked from the smoke like a truly hypnotic and intoxicating ritual. Engaging, powerful and dense. The new album by Brazilian stoner/doom band WEEDEVIL, with official release scheduled for June 6th and digital distribution orchestrated by the brazilian label Abraxas Records conjures these and other adjectives.

The album 'Profane Smoke Ritual' (2024) explores deep themes inspired by figures such as Aleister Crowley, as well as the duality and liberation of Lilith and Baphomet, addressing spirituality, transcendence and mystery. The lyrics written by drummer Flavio Cavichiolli invite listeners to delve into their own reflections on existence and the meaning of life, seeking to inspire deeper and more introspective thoughts. “I especially highlight the song ‘Profane Smoke Ritual’, which portrays a journey of spiritual liberation through rituals and experiences with cannabis smoke. This song reflects my own personal exploration of the connection between mind, body and spirit”, says Flávio.

The album 'Profane Smoke Ritual' is a deep journey through the mysteries of spirituality and liberation, inspired by figures like Crowley, Lilith, and Baphomet. Our lyrics invite listeners to dive into reflections on existence and the meaning of life. With a unique fusion of styles and an intuitive approach to composition, each track of this album seeks to provoke a significant impact, encouraging profound thoughts and a deeper connection with our spiritual journey.

The new material presents the band's new lineup which now features (in addition to Flávio) the musicians Carol Poison (vocals), Jimmy Olden (guitar), Henrique Bittencourt (guitar) and Cláudio HC Funari (bass). Even under the guise of a new beginning with the new lineup, the group continues to maintain its essence, now led by the powerful voice of Poison (who carries Heavy Metal influences in her inspirations) and with an always efficient instrumental section composed of proficient musicians. "Profane Smoke Ritual" maintains existing positive points and adds new nuances.

Following, Flávio talks a little more about the band's musicians and news: "Jimmy's participation on guitar was fundamental in this album. We established a very quick creative connection, which contributed significantly to the sound and musical direction of the project. Each member of the band brought their own unique contribution, with Henrique bringing the heavy riffs, Cláudio incorporating the depth of the bass and Poison's vocals adding a special touch, inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Candlemass.”

Profane Smoke Ritual releases Thursday, June 6th (get it here). In addition to digital distribution by Abraxas Records, the album already has physical versions confirmed (with dates to be defined) with the usual partners: CD by Smolder Brain Records (Mexico) and Vinyl by DHU Records (Netherlands).

ELECTRIC CULT & WEEDEVIL Team Up for ‘Cult of Devil Sounds’

Through the wonders of virtual communication two bands from different countries have breached the distance, united through the universal language of music: WEEDEVIL from Brazil and ELECTRIC CULT from Mexico. And so we arrive at the split EP, 'Cult of Devil Sounds' (2023).

The Brazilian stoner/doom metal band Weedevil from São Paulo has already become a well-known name in the Brazilian heavy underground, having already delivered some great material. The main highlight is their LP 'The Return' (2022), which features five powerful tracks transiting between the lysergic and the dense. The band delivers two tracks on their side of the new split: “Darkness Inside” and “Burn It.” The instrumental density is still present and more pulsating than ever, embracing dark and solid tones, hands intertwined with the energy and virtue of Mauren McGee's vocals. Weedevil take us through the paths of psychedelia and seventies rock en route to a new journey proposed in a seductive way by the band, which does not shy away from delivering music with layers to be unveiled with each new listen.

The Mexican stoner/sludge/doom quartet Electric Cult, which released the great EPs The First Rite and Fuzzeremony as their first two releases, again deliver an exquisite sound surrounded by mud and mist with their two tracks present on the release, “Rising From Hell” and “Esoteric Madness,” completing the release partnership with the band Weedevil. Again we have the already traditional density and obscurity of the Mexican group composed of robust stony riffs and vocals that are sometimes demonic, sometimes harmonic. The band remains relentless in its proposal and masterfully completes the release, which has a physical version edited by the newcomer Smolder Brains Records in CD format.

With art by the talented Steven Yoyada, Cult of Devil Sounds is a milestone of integration between two powerful names in the field, each based on its own particularities and coming from a different country, but integrated in a common objective: to please us with the gloomy, the dense, the muddy. São Paulo Doom ‘n’ Heavy Metal Crew WEEDEVIL Venture “Underwater”

Marking a new and even more promising moment for Brazilian doomers WEEDEVIL (in the course of releasing their first full-length album, The Return, debuting a new lineup) the single "Underwater" will be released on digital platforms on February 4th through Abraxas Records. Dense, dark, and with a touch of tragedy, the track gives a twisted charge, guided by stoner and doom metal strands.

"Underwater" relates the turbulent story of a woman through mysterious and dangerous waters surrounded by menacing sea creatures that want to drag her to the bottom of the sea. The song inspires agony and danger, but also presents in its climax a positive twist with the woman finally revealing her power and becoming an entity that vanquishes her abusers before finding the void.

According to vocalist Lo Scar (author of the lyrics), the song helps to compose a panel that developed in a physically and emotionally troubled time, with the first rehearsal of the new lineup taking place while she was injured, as well as what has developed since her recovery.

"Underwater" is the first chapter of 'The Return' (2022), which features highly emotionally charged conceptual material based on stoner-doom metal sonority and scheduled for release on streaming in April, with a vinyl version already confirmed together with the Dutch label DHU Records.
