Imagine this scenario, perhaps you encountered it before. In actuality or in some alt-reality. You come upon two individuals one sober, the other - not so much. The clear headed one chides the chemically impaired one, patiently refuting and refusing all at once. Imagine the two are women, if it helps, and you offer assistance only to be turned away. And you wonder why, figuring you could've aided in some way. Consider however that adding another variable to this equation at this moment might indeed complicate things. For any number of reasons. So the sober minded person wisely negates outside offers of assistance no matter how well or I'll intentioned, because this is bigger than a controlled experiment and the stakes are so much higher. Well I am that sober minded person. And I was that chemically impaired individual. And I am becoming more and more aware of my vulnerability.
