Week 12 Reading Response
The reading for this week is from Chapter 8 on “Framing arguments”. Arguments are defined with the characteristics and we are also shown ways to be effective with our arguments. The myths about arguments include that arguments are about winning, are only for highly debated topics and issues, are based on different opinions, and are only to prove points. One who is framing an argument is taking a specific side on the issue and backing his information with the sufficient information and facts to back up the claim. The purpose of arguments are to be rhetoric and persuade the other party.
(I used this GIF as an example to how an individual should be ready for a debate or argument with the correct evidence, Therefore, “drop the mic” once you finish)
On Chapter 9, we learn now hoe to construct arguments. By looking at the purpose, audience, evidence, assumptions, and qualifications, arguments are built in a very organized and effective manner. Also, learning about inductive and deductive reasoning is very important to have a good argument. Identifying general and particular assumptions and assertions is key to avoid giving wrong facts or losing the argument.
As a business major, arguments will take place all the time between partners, employees, bosses, and even competitors. It is very important to be prepared and have evidence and facts to convince the other party what you are arguing about.
