The Boys of Hong Kong. Alexandra Leese. Photo. 2018.
Alexandra Leese is a photographer based in London, United Kingdom. Born of both British and Chinese descent, Leese spent her early years in Hong Kong and as such considers it her second home. As such, much of their work concerns a tension between identities and a search for a sense of belonging. Leese’s work has been featured on Dazed Magazine, iD, Another Man amongst other magazines. The Boys of Hong Kong is Leese’s first solo exhibition.
In The Boys of Hong Kong, Leese considers the “new wave of less rigid gender identity among Hong Kong’s male youth culture”. Through a photographic lens that paint her subjects alongside the physical environment, Leese’s work is imbued with a sense of gentle intimacy in its challenge towards perceptions of masculinity.
You can watch Leese’s film for The Boys of Hong Kong here.

Selected works from Hiding in the City (隐身在城市里). Liu Bolin (刘勃麟). Performance. 2005-2018.
Liu Bolin (刘勃麟), born in 1973, is an artist from Shandong province. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2001. The Hiding in the City series, featuring Liu himself intricately painted to blend in with various city landscapes, is Liu’s earliest as well as most iconic work. The series was originally a form of silent protest against the Chinese government, prompted by the demolition of a Beijing art space that Liu was attached to.
Liu is headlining the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, an Australian photographic festival, from August 24, 2019 to October 20, 2019.

Electronic Girl (電動少女) by Chinese Football. 2016.
Chinese Football are an indie-rock band from Wuhan, China. Formed in 2011, moniker began as a reference to the then defunct emo band American Football. Since then, they have become one of the most sought after acts in China’s indie scene, selling out shows across China and Japan. Chinese Football are known for their emo, pop, punk and math-rock influence, and they note the 90s Wuhan punk rock scene and Japanese anime as particular influences for their music.
Electronic Girl is the lead single for Chinese Football’s 2017 EP “Here Comes a New Challenger”. Marked by an “upbeat melodic riff [and] funky bass hook”, the song is a nostalgic turn to a past where first love never realised, and the turn to the digital world for teenaged otakus.
