Task 4: Brief reflection on week 1&2
Week One
In week One, the tutors gave us a basic overview of the course for the year, as well as their expectations of us. We also got our shopping list for our equipment. I suspect time management will be my greatest challenge as there seems to be a substantial amount of coursework. There was also a discussion in Tony’s CLASS around the line; all words and images are empty and meaningless.
Week Two
On Wednesday morning, we had class with Geoff and went over the basics of the golden triangle (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO) and learned how to take a meter reading.
In the Wednesday afternoon class with Tony, we completed a 24 photo diagnostic task I have a lot to improve on but hopefully that will come with time. I’m also still getting to know my new camera and there were a few quirks I still need to figure out.
Afterwards, we had a look at some of Tony’s work and then listened to Ted Talks video of Ken Robinson discussing how we don’t take creativity seriously in the educational system and that we should change that. It was an interesting discussion and it did bring up an important point bout how difficult it is to maintain a creative outlook in an educational system that doesn’t promote or nurture it. We also discussed whether or not it was possible to be a neutral observer as photographer. Most of agreed that this wasn’t really possible or even desirable.
On Friday, we discussed the maths behind F stop on our camera. I did help me understand the mechanics behind the use of the lens, and how depth of field works. Hopefully I’ll be able to bring this more in depth knowledge over to my camera work.
