Day 4 - Columbia Falls, MT and West Glacier, MT
Weird Beers Group
What is the weirdest flavour beer you have ever tried?
I had a really good birthday, on a sidenote, why the hell does my tiny neighborhood grocery store (all the way in Hawaii) have such a cool selection of beers? We got voodoo doughnut, pretzel raspberry chocolate ale. Anyway. love y'all.
The Mainstreaming of Weird
On the Atlantic blog last week, John Metcalfe asked if craft beer had finally gone too far. Siting dozens of insane beers with massive price tags and ridiculous, asinine ingredients, Metcalfe made a good point. There has to be a point where weirdness for weirdness sake goes into the realm of self parody. Meteor dust, bull testicles, pickle juice -- why?
For a moment I thought this was an east coast phenomenon. A trend lead by Sam Calgione at Dogfish Head. Then I remembered Captain Beefheart and Duck Duck Drunk, two different meat infused beers from local Portland breweries I love. That's just gross, and I'm not saying that as a vegetarian. Beer should be beer and meat should be meat and sometimes you eat them together, but you never dip your sausage in your lager.
When I saw Fort George's Java the Hop, I thought it was just another one of these mashed-up, silly beers. I didn't even notice the Star Wars pun because i was so hung up on the concept. IPA plus coffee equals... fun? I thought Java the Hop was just a dumb idea that got brewed up for jokes. It's sort of a mind trip to pour out a golden colored beer only to be greeted by a massive whiff black coffee. It's a joke.
But I kind of like it. It sort of works. I mean, Java the Hop is not an IPA by any stretch, but it is a beer that melds cold brew coffee with Amarillo hops to perfection. It probably helps that the coffee isn't the thick black stuff you make at work. It's from Portland's Coava roasters and comes packed with the light flavors of black tea, not so much burnt grounds.
There is a place in the wider beer world for weird, experimental beers. Look at how great and mainstream coffee stouts have become, and a few decades ago that was a crazy idea. Look at barrel aging and the amazing varieties of fruit beer.
There has to be room for experimentation in order for new beers to emerge, but weirdness for weirdness sake does no one any good. You can sell your moon rock lager if you want, but it's no going to catch on unless it tastes amazing.
