Congratulations to @demimonde-semigoddess, @hypexion and @teaxch for winning this week’s contest!
It wasn’t easy to pick winners, and I had quite a few I would have liked to include. The process is pretty difficult, but I’m very happy with everyone’s entries and I can’t wait to do commentary.
@demimonde-semigoddess — Hellcrawl Gurmix is a card that I immediately began evaluating as if it was real. This is a card I would like to draft with, and maybe even brew with casually. Jund lands, Gitrog synergy, fetchlands, scrying and delerium — there’s so much to do, and the best part? It’s not overpowered at all. It’s just strong enough to be a card that gives you options, makes you feel good for playing it, and rewards a specific style while being versatile. This really is a fantastic card.
@hypexion — Wib-Wob the Jellich is kind of silly. But you made a) a zombie wizard that totally works, and b) incorporated the Ooze type with token makers and created a surprisingly interesting uncommon legendary creature. He complicates the board, plays into aggressive synergies, makes tokens, regenerates flavorfully, so, like, what’s not to love? I could see an argument for him being Sultai but that’s just a possibility. Great job on that flavor text as well, by the way. 10/10.
@teaxch — Shark Confidant feels almost silver-bordered, but mechanically and humorously, I think that this card would fit great into quite a few decks. It’s certainly a limited bomb and a fantastic control payoff. Making 0/0 Sharks with death triggers, too? Fun stuff! I feel that this is a good custom card; by that I mean that, despite it as-is almost definitely never seeing black-bordered release, I would put it in a custom cube in a heartbeat. It’s good design, and tickles the fun sensors. Small wording note: unless I’m mistaken, I believe the card could say “where X is that card’s converted mana cost” instead. No biggie. Making sharks is fun all the same.
Thank you all for your entries! Weird commentary and some VERY interesting runners-up tomorrow.
