And my last Weird Wednesday before the end of Spooky Month. We are closing in now.
So, what to post today... How about a random creepy poem I'll make up right now? Here we go.
-
There I sat, within my home, And from my halls, I heard a groan, So quick I rose, hand on my phone, My heart in my chest beating On came the light, and through I searched, As dreadful mind did dream and lurch, But halls were quiet as sepulchered church, The wood of beams a creaking But there I found no cause of sound, No groaning thing, no beast or hound, And in the garden, no disturbed ground, Perhaps my mind was dreaming But from the garden, I looked high, And in my window, I gave a cry, A withered face, two forlorn eyes, And so I took to screaming The groaning thing, it watched me clear, As my dear heart was clutched by fear, It lurched and stepped, towards my room near, For me was it seeking I raised my phone, I called the cops, Surely some intruder with his props, I heard it howling, but then it stopped, A silence from its shrieking The cops arrived and they stormed in I waited for them to catch that thing But out they came, with all nothing They gave me a berating I'd watched the doors, it hadn't left Was it an intruder, there for theft? But the cops came up empty, left bereft And outside I was waiting And so they searched, but found no sign And so they left, and left me to find No mark of him, no prints or lines But I know what I saw that night And so I sit, and so I hear That groan again, again so near And so again my soul gripped by fear As something blocks the light
And there we go. I wrote a creepy poem, pretty much off the top of my head. Please enjoy. I'm not a poet by nature, but why not give it a go.
It still counts as Wednesday if I post it before I go to sleep! I don’t care that it’s nearly 3AM, it’s still Wednesday!
THE RAVEN
…here’s a cool version of the classic horror poem, as read by the late, great Christopher Lee.
It is too late to give further explanations right now, but seriously, it’s a good version. Listen to it, if you’ve never understood why people love this poem.
FEAR OF... Okay, I don't know what this one is called. And it's strange.
This is the last phobia I'll discuss today, and it is by far the most niche. It's a fear of people swelling up and exploding.
Yeah, a strange one, but you'd be surprised how often it comes up.
So, to explain-
Back in my post about my relationship with horror, I mentioned a traumatic incident I had. Well, this was it. Years back, I was up late watching TV with my Mum, when an advert for a film came on. I'm hesitant to name it in case it puts it in my recommended stuff, but it was the cult horror movie, Slither.
Anyone who's seen the film likely knows where I'm going with this.
For those that don't, there is a somewhat legendary scene involving the above stated phobia and a character named Brenda. The advert was flashy, action packed, and ended by and showing a brief flash of this scene with Brenda, she says she doesn't feel well, and then the ad cut to a... *ahem* splash screen in a way that gave a very vivid idea of what happened to Brenda.
And I was traumatised by this somewhat.
I was not 18 when I saw this trailer, and went to bed that night having terrible thoughts of people swelling and bursting. I shared my room with my brother back then, so being trapped with someone expanding was really at the forefront of my mind.
But that would have been it, and I'd have likely forgotten it... except a while later, I saw another advert for the same fucking film, one that showed the films parasites in a bathroom. Great...
Since then, I have not been able to separate bathrooms from this film. Not for over a decade, nearly two. I remember it whenever I go into a bathroom, I remember when I get in the shower, when I go to the toilet, I think about this horror at least once a day, if I'm lucky, if only very briefly.
And I have never seen Slither. I don't plan to. I've looked up what happens, and that's as far as I'm going. I don't think I could handle it.
But since I realised this phobia, I see it all over the place. You would be amazed how often it comes up!
Mr Creosote from Monty Python. Various characters in Rick and Morty. The Sci-Fi genre is chock full of them. How many villains in fiction have been "overloaded with power" and explode! That's usually fine with me, unless they actually swell up first. There's an episode of The Amazing World of Gumball where it happens to Alan, who is a balloon, but it still freaks me out! Why is this trope such a thing?!
So, yeah, this is my strangest fear. I can't explain it more, but it unsettles me deeply. It is nowhere in my work, I'm not using it anywhere, and no one can make me.
The end.
TRYPOPHOBIA
Yeah, don't really need to explain this one. A phobia of close repeating holes, but for me, it's worst in skin or other such things. Sets off my panic response. The Surinam Toad, and any horror thing where someone's skin has holes in it. Nope, gross, don't like it.
This one isn't complicated. Just keep it away from me. Nope!
God, I hope making this post doesn't put it in my recommendeds.
THALASSOPHOBIA
Second phobia I'll be talking about today is my fear of deep water.
Now, this one is more of a love-hate relationship. I've never actually been in real deep water, I've barely been to the beach, but deep water in TV shows and video games sets off that fear response just fine.
But the ocean is fascinating! And I love the idea of leviathans and sea giants, even if seeing murky depths caused my stomach to crunch.
The idea of being in water and not being able to see below the surface is terrifying. And being underwater, and seeing something emerging out of the briny murk? Absolute terror!
So why do I watch videos of it?
This is a phobia I love. I can't swim in video games, not unless I am 100% sure there is nothing in the water, and even then I'll be on edge, but I'll watch videos of fictional leviathans, watching through my fingers.
And the number of sea monsters I've made for my stories. Every fantasy world I make has a sea beast. Every single one. Because I love it, even if it scares me... I love it because it scares me.
ARACHNOPHOBIA
The first fear I'm talking about today is a simple one. Spiders. They creep me out, their dark little eyes, their furry bodies, their scuttley little movements. They make my skin crawl to be near them.
But, I don't hate spiders.
Spiders didn't do anything to deserve my hatred. I even think they're cool little critters. They can weave a material as strong as steel, climb walls, and they're one of the only animals in nature to make traps. That is amazing! Also, they're mythological significance is always cool, weavers, manipulators, they're just considered the clever animal.
And I've even put spiders in some of my fantasy worlds, though none of the ones I've mentioned on here before. I've got the Old God spider Gargolath, from one of my fantasy series, and the semi-human Arakkin from the same series. I've even got the Fate Weaver from an idea I'm still working on, who is half moth, half spider, all silk production. So yeah, I do think spiders are cool.
I just can't be near them. My brain just flashes red flags if I'm close to a big one. Shelob, Limbo, even those cute little jumping spiders. They just set me on edge. But, I'm also a cleaner for my job, so I do encounter a fair few of them, and I'm alright with the small ones.
So yeah, this fear is simple and irrational. I know those spiders are harmless to me. I just can't help it. Done.
Welcome to Weird Wednesday, where I post whatever the hell I want to do with Halloween and Horror.
So today, let's talk about fear. Specifically, my fear. I'm gonna talk about the things I'm afraid of, and none of you can stop me.
I'm also going to do it in a bunch of smaller posts, because why not.
INCOMING!
