What's your favourite first sentence from a novel?

I haven't read many novels lately (too many books I need to read and/or too many books I just haven't gotten around to yet), but I always liked John Darnielle's version of "I dreamed a dream of the end of the world" from Wolf in White Van (which is not the same thing as the song by the same name)

Multi party systems are hard to realize with this "winner gets it all" BS the US has going on. You need proportional representation for that to properly work. Honestly you need proportional representation for ANYTHING to properly work but oh well ...

Yeah, I don’t know how we get from where we are now to there, because the current system seems optimized to maintain the current system.  But if I were a wizard.

...Or maybe Trump will break the GOP so badly that the US party system will actually open up for change???  I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but these haven’t been our parties forever, so who knows.

Do you agree with Viktor?

I haven't read much Viktor Frankl, but I agree with his thesis that the ability to endure suffering is a valuable and meaningful quality.

Hey Frank, what do you think of these two sentences: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

They are correct but I don't think either sentence could be said by someone who was not an expert in both fruit fly biology and Newtonian mechanics

It works surprisingly well in the film though ... and I would have loved to see them try to explain how Fenrir is Loki's son even more, tbh.

it definitely does and I totally got why they did it (but they didn’t know that the wolf was their sibling, either?). I love this movie, though. it’s one of the few mcu movies that I accept.

@weiszklee we have procedures that list all of the setpoints in bar, but all of the inlet/outlet pressures are in psi. Why choose when you can make your techs crazy?

JD Salinger: What is/was your worst subject in school?

If we’re talking k-12, I’d say biology. Science might as well be magic to me. 

In college, it was math, which is a tool that--like magic--can be used for good and evil, and I’ve only experienced the latter. 

Graduate school? There was this lit class I was dying to take about detective fiction. That was a lie and I hope that professor chokes on his own mediocre theses that he tried to make me write about. Seriously? Fuck that guy.
