Welcome Week-

Friday, September 26th

It has been a crazy week and I cannot believe that I have only been here a few days. I think yesterday was when me and my flatmates crossed over from acquaintances to friends, and I feel so lucky to have them! We are from all over the world, with Tjipo (Chips) from Botswana, Farzana from Kuwait, Kyo from South Korea, Masem from Canada, me from the US, and then Maryam and Manuela from Birmingham. Maryam chose us a "chippy" (fish and chips restaurant") and we all went together and it was really good-  the cod did not really taste like fish and it came with a curry sauce and the fries were salt and vinegar flavored. I rated it a 10/10. Farzana from Kuwait also likes to cook for us and she makes really good curry and biryani. I spent 20 pounds on a blender and am trying to make good use of it, and try to give my roommates smoothies when they are around. Having a common kitchen is a great way to build community between flatmates. 

I have been able to meet a few Americans (from Texas, South Carolina, and Colorado) and generally people love to chat about America when they learn I am from there. Common themes include guns, the drinking age, how large the country is, New York City, hating the Chiefs, and Donald Trump.  

I have been pretty busy all of the time, and I do not feel lonely- which was one of my main concerns because I do not know anyone here. The City Center is about half an hour from my flat, and I have been there three times with different groups of people. I really like the center and there are numerous good places to shop and eat. I have also made an Italian Friend from near Venice named Emi and we have been shopping and going to coffee. The University is putting on a party tonight and in the memo it claimed it will be "a party that only exists in your dreams." So we shall see about that tonight with Emi and my flatmates Kyo and Chips. 

I also booked a flight to Dublin in early October. I will go there with Ainsley who is a friend from cross country in high school. We are going to do a day tour to see the Cliffs of Moher and Galway City. Her dad also recommended a "Guinness Tour" and she signed us up for that as well. 

I am very happy to be here and I do not think this week could have gone more perfectly. We shall see how I feel when classes start and the stress begins to build. I am getting a little bit more nervous about my classes, but then again it should not be too bad, compared to last year.
