@weleads​   /   he’s a little torn right now on how to react.  wants to thank her for going after dog, for saving him like she did.  but he also wants to scold her for doing something so stupid as running off in a damn blizzard all on her own.  she probably heard enough of that parental scolding from michonne though, so he’ll just stick with the thank you.  ❝ y’know means a lot, that y’went after him.  didn’t have to do that. ❞

      It’d been a long road to get here. At the heart of it, Rick knows they can’t take any solidarity between communities for granted -- that they can’t take peace for granted. They’ve built something bigger than they’ve seen before, following the downfall of the Saviors -- of Negan. It’s something Rick wasn’t sure he’d have a chance to see.

      There were moments he nearly sabotaged it for the sake of vengeance, for a shortsightedness brought on by an onslaught of threats that never really stopped. It had been months since the explosion at the bridge, months of healing that allowed Rick to at least walk the grounds again.

      He lowers onto the front steps, hand reflexively on his side. He’s used to the dull ache from old injuries, but he’s yet to catalog the rebar incident as old. Joining Carl, he reaches to clasp a hand to his shoulder. Something seemed off.

      ❝  You helped build this, Carl. You’re allowed to enjoy it a little. ❞

      The grip of the colt fits in his palm like an extension of his hand, cradled like an old friend. A protector. An enforcer.  Internally, there’s a brewing doubt -- is he out of practice? Has he spent too long dreaming of peace, tending to the community’s internal needs, without gunpowder and blood thick around him? When the weight of the gun leaves his hand, only to slide into the holster at his hip, his decision solidifies.

     Something had always been on the horizon, hadn’t it? Something readying to sink its teeth into their lives again -- this time as people masquerading under the skin of the dead, their morals just as rotting.

      As he steps into the hall, he sees Judith there. He didn’t want her childhood to be ransacked by war or fighting -- she has to know how to fight, to be good at it and while Rick’s sure that she is, he’ll always seek to protect her.    ❝  Y’know, your brother used to give me that look. When he wanted to be a part of somethin’.  ❞

@weleads​   /   ❝ so, are you not talkin’ to me now? ❞  she knows he wasn’t too happy with her when she called him out for talking back to his mom.  they did appreciate that he got medical supplies for them, for her dad, but lori had been right.  it was dangerous and he should’ve talked to someone before going down there alone.

@weleads​   /   she knows its difficult for him.  having been forced to raise his sister after rick’s disappearance.  though michonne was there too, she knew carl did a lot for the girl, being protective of her since she was a baby.  it wasn’t fair that he had been forced to lose both his parents.  ❝ i know they are.  things change so rapidly in this new life of ours...  but you still have family.  you still have support.  michonne and the council have things handled in terms of leadership.  you still, for now, get to remain a kid.  and you can always come here if you ever need some type of break.  i know filling in those shoes has to be tough.  ezekiel and i will always have our arms open for you, and anyone else from alexandria. ❞
