9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?

It’s rare for me to straight-up dislike a character, but I just do not like either Anakin Skywalker or Kylo Ren. Like, okay, I can enjoy meta about what might have been, or fic imagining them as something other than what they are, but the reality in the movies is that they are boring. Anakin’s problem is mostly just the bad writing and stilted acting of the prequels, but Kylo Ren falls victim to one of my greatest pet peeves in writing ever: NOT. WRITING. THE WHOLE. STORY.

This is everything we know about Kylo Ren in the movie:

he’s Han and Leia’s kid

he’s under the tutelage of Snoke, and killing Han is part of his training somehow 

he has some spiritual connection to his grandfather (either real or imagined), whose helmet he has for some reason

he’s strong in the Force but Rey is way stronger (if less skilled)

Everything else about him, particularly his backstory, is left to extended media like tie-in novels and comics. But those are supposed to be supplemental, not fundamental, to the actual movie. If he’s meant to be a sympathetic antagonist, then make him so in the movie. What I see in the movie is a whiny edgelord who might possibly have a personality in there somewhere, but I don’t know what it is because the writers couldn’t be arsed to include it in the main fucking event. 

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

The fucking mind meld arc from Star Trek: Enterprise. Because it makes no fucking sense within the timeline. 

It’s established in Star Trek: The Original Series that the Vulcan mind meld is something practiced very secretively and rarely shown to outsiders (that Spock does it so often, and in the presence of people like Kirk and McCoy, is a Big Fucking Deal), but on Vulcan it’s done regularly (children read each others’ thoughts as part of their betrothal ceremony, for example). 

Slight problem: Enterprise is set only one hundred years before TOS. Enterprise claims that mind melding has been banned for years as a deviant practice, and that improperly done it can cause a horrible disease (clearly a metaphor for sex and HIV). 

You’re telling me that this incredibly risky practice, capable of spreading horrible mind diseases, is, in less than a hundred years, suddenly practiced so often that Spock (35 at the start of the series) has no problem doing it? That it’s practiced traditionally as a ritual between children? 

Just to show how absurd this is, lots of things have changed since 1917, but this is like an entire society suddenly mandating ritual child sex in a post-HIV era. For no apparent reason.

1. What’s your personal favourite thing you wrote this year?

That has to be Breaking The Raft. That fic has now ‘fixed’ for me, any number of the things that were wrong with both AoU, and dealt with the aftermath of Civil War.

Writing Laura Barton as a BAMF bitch who just happens to be Peggy Carter’s granddaughter was almost cathartic, and I enjoyed it IMMENSELY.
