The ‘Wellington’ boot.
Not long after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington instructed his boot-maker, George Hoby, in St James’s Street to come up with an alternative to the longer, tasselled Hessian boot. He wanted a shorter, calf-length boot with a tighter fit which could be worn inside trousers (which were becoming fashionable). The result was a soft calfskin boot which could withstand the rigours of riding but not look out of place with informal evening wear.
