Separation was never something that had been a part of the plan. Leaving, he’d never been a part of the plan. The problem was, that when Wesley was faced with the very real probability that the choice was save himself or her, it would always be her. She was the closest thing to love he would ever be lucky enough to touch, a blessing and a curse considering that also made her the easiest to shift into, when you look back on it. It took longer than it should have for them to realize that he might have looked like who they wanted, but they ended up with the wrong one.
This explained why, after enough time and enough breaking, and reforming of bones, he’d returned. Door opened without permission, but shoulder stayed planted with a surprisingly easy air, right in the doorway. “Surprise.”
