‘Honey, I’ may seem a simplistic effort, but its glistering mandolin/harp, gingerly sultry vocals, and fittingly honeyed melody give off an intimate charm that trickles straight into the heart. It’s a dreamlike introduction to new Los Angeles singer songwriter Wes Reeve. Her debut’s jangling cadence, which conjures a wind chime swaying defenselessly in a whimsical breeze, and its disarming delivery combine effortlessly to evoke Lykke Li with a light pixie dusting of Lana Del Rey. All of Wes’ songs are reportedly written through a stream of consciousness and draw heavily from childhood memories and classic fairytale narratives. Her whole aesthetic is based deeply in make-believe and otherworldly experience. She illustrates her own artwork and directs and produces her own videos with a comforting home-made feel. On this, Wes explains “’Honey, I' is about the mind changing good things into bad things. You’re in a beautiful meadow where the sun is shining and there are butterflies landing on your shoulders and wolves letting you pet them, and then suddenly, without warning, it’s pouring with rain, the butterflies are gone and the wolves are bearing their teeth at you. A stranger looking into the meadow will say that he saw you create the storm. I wrote this song about my friend.”

A debut video for the inaugural single, which can be viewed below, was inspired by Studio Ghibli’s The Tale Of Princess Kaguya and depicts two versions of the same girl, a higher self and lower self. The higher self is the angel, complete and balanced. The angel watches on disappointedly as the earthly lower self continues to turn all the good things she comes across into haunting, frightening versions of what they were, without noticing what she’s doing, as she struggles to find peace on the earth. ‘Honey, I’ is an exquisite debut from absorbing new artist Wes Reeve, who’s already working on her debut album Rainbeam.
