Western Influences and Its Impact on Korean Pop

In terms of Hallyu, which is the Korean Wave, all three readings by Seabrook, Maliangkay, and Kim point to western influences as to why Korean Pop groups have found not only local, but largely global success.  All three scholars argue that the cultural hybridity, translated to a mixing of multiple cultures, between America/Europe and South Korea is the main reason for K-Pop’s success.  The combination of Western influences, whether it be through American/European sound, flow, lyrics, or dancing, coupled with Korean cultural values such as romance and respect, directly relates to the positive response Korean Pop receives globally.  Due to this positive reaction, South Korea has become the second biggest music market in the world, trailing only the United States.  While each author makes the same overall, general statement, they vary in their opinions as to why western influences lead to K-Pop success.  For one, Seabrook argues that their beauty and dancing, which is often taken from western influences, is the main reason K-Pop groups are successful.  In addition to that belief, he believes humility is another reason these groups are globally successful. Secondly, Maliangkay argues that Korean Pop girl groups are successful largely in part due to the way they are sexualized(a major American theme).  Finally, Kim says that music agencies, which know how to properly use western influence, are the reason for K-Pop success.  Kim also says that technology is a major reason for K-Pop success, as people can follow their favorite musicians wherever they go, regardless of how far away the fans themselves live.  Regardless of how they’re getting there, one fact that cannot be argued is that Korean-Pop is becoming more and more successful every single day, as evidenced by the fact that BTS was nominated for a Grammy two nights ago, as well as that they presented an award at the show (https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2019/02/10/k-pop-band-bts-grammys-2019/2832970002/).  When BTS was shown on camera and on stage, social media lost their collective mind, thus proving how a Korean Pop group can take over not only South Korea and Asia, but the United States as well.  Another strong indicator of K-Pop taking over globally is seen through SM’s world tour(http://www.smentertainment.com/Entertainment/Concert).  SM, which is a massive music agency, holds some of the most famous Korean Pop groups to its name and has used western influences in these groups to get them known not only on a South Korean stage, but on an Asian and even Western(America/Europe) stage as well.  It’s due to these world tours that K-Pop groups are seen globally, which in turn allows them to become more and more successful.  In conclusion, all three of the authors from the readings argue that the Korean Wave is expanding to the United States and Europe, in addition to Asia, because of the Western influences that Korean Pop uses.  While these scholars differ in their opinion as to how Korean-Pop uses these Western influences, one fact that can’t be ignored is that K-Pop is slowly beginning to take over the world.
