Culled!

Yeah, so this is just what an archivist wants to see- a note that says, “Culled for the most attractive bills (superficially).” Hmpf. Here are a few examples of what counts as “most attractive.”

The sea and its wonders / by Mary and Elizabeth Kirby,  was published in 1875, could it be the same? I like to think Cornelia would have supported female authors.

Due Bills

Some of the later materials in the collection are proving to be very interesting. Although some of these are dated after Boardman sold his dry goods store, he was clearly still very active in business. This due bill dated 18 Jan 1820 promising to pay Samuel Flewwelling six hundred and eighty three dollars on or before the first day of May next with interest from the date. The bill was enclosed in a letter to Marcus Lockwood informing him that Flewwelling had the note and Boardman was sending two hundred and four dollars which he will deliver to Mr. William W. Boardman at the home of Daniel Boardman, Broadway, New York to be paid over to Mr. Flewwelling. Boardman notes that if he wishes, Lockwood could call on Flewwelling at the City Bank on Wall Street, ask for the note and pay the balance.

When business transactions happen in New York, we don’t necessarily expect to be familiar with the parties involved. This is an exception. Samuel Flewwelling was married to Julia Elvira Canfield Flewwelling. She was a student of Sarah Pierce at the Litchfield Female Academy. A Ralph Earl portrait of her and two of her siblings hangs in our History Museum gallery. Julia was known as the “Lily of the Valley” and her sister Elizabeth as the “Rose of Sharon.” Flewwelling was a businessman and banker responsible for managing the Canfield family holdings in the Western Reserve of Ohio. In addition to the Judson Canfield papers, we hold a collection of Samuel Flewwelling’s papers. 

Julia Canfield Flewwelling is seated in the center between her brother Henry and sister Elizabeth.

Westward Ho

On May 21, 1798 a notation at the bottom of an entry about work at the house states, “Judson Canfield went through town for New Connecticut this day.” Boardman isn’t the only local to have been painted by Earl, Canfield was as well and we are fortunate to have this portrait in our collection, and it is on display along with those of his wife and children. 

A few days later, on June 2, 1798, Boardman himself set off. There are no details about his journey, and as there are no entries between August 24, 1798 and May 1, 1799, his return is not noted.

New Connecticut Galore!

This book may be small, but it’s chock full of details about travelling West. On May 8, 1798, Augustin Thayer spent the day getting ready for New Connecticut. He’s listed in an earlier volume as agreeing to work for Boardman in 1796. The following entry on May 9, 1798 notes that “Mr. Holmes, 2 men, and wagon arrived at sunddown from Litchfield going on to New Connecticut.” On the following page an entry dated May 10th states, “Augustin Thayer got team & all ready and set off for New Connecticut in company with Mr. Holmes men about 3 o’clock PM. Good weather.” 

From The Connecticut Land Company and Accompanying Papers published by the Western Reserve Historical Society, we see that on September 2, 1795, Bond No. 14 was granted to Uriel Holmes, Jr. and Elijah Boardman for their $60,000 investment in the enterprise. Sureties were provided by Moses Seymour, Uriel Holmes, Samuel Law, and Nathaniel Gorham.
