▫️◻5 Days till Labor Day!!◻▫️ Playing🔊🎶🎶 : Addicted by Marq Pierre Camper💃🕺 : Creator| Writer @Shilorian, Creator | Dancer Camper AJ Location🏙:Atlantic Mall (Brooklyn) 🎭🎭History of Mas🎭🎭 : In the late 1830s the celebrations of what would later become Mas (as we have discussed) were exclusively celebrated by white elites in particularly Trinidad where the history begins. The visual aesthetics of these festivals were characterized by lavishly designed dresses and extravagant displays of wealth. In one instance an elite is reported to have had such a lavish gown designed with live fireflies in small pockets which outdid all the other persons present and essentially stopped the "fete." Such displays of Grandeur would later be transformed and adopted with mas costumes created by freed slaves. However post emancipation, the festival transformed with the African/Trinidadian presence. European spectators became increasingly nervous and critical of the new display of the festival. In an issue of the Port of Spain Gazette during the 1850s condescending rhetoric is used as an elite refers to J'ouvert as orgies and participants as "semi-savages from God knows where." In addition description by elites concluded that these freed slaves "exhibit[ed] hellish scenes and the most demonical representation of slavery." With these "hellish scenes" most likely referring to Jab Molassie and other forms of the Jab, both participants ( freed slaves) and newly spectators ( Europeans) began to memoralize distinct realities of the festival. To onlookers the untamed expression during carnival was an abomination, to masqueraders characters of mas were developed and molded as satirical reflections of the people and the issues in society.... Molassie is also French for Mèlasse other wise Molasses. The Jab Molassie is one of several varieties of devil mas played in Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the Caribbean (most popularly in Grenada). Certain Jab Molassie will adapt variation of other devil mas including "the beast" which incorporates the use of shackles, chains and other metal restraints to "hold back" other "devils" . These restraints are closely tied to slavery as metal chains were used on slaves. This is also the essence of Grenada Jab Jab tradition. In addition Haiti is home to masqueraders known as the Lanse Kod who also paint themselves in grease, oil etc. To resemble African Slaces commemorating the fight of slaves, and freedom in 1804. JAB JAB is representative of the evils of slavery.... Jouvert is a contraction of French "jour overt" or day break/ day open. During the early morning revelers accompanied by steel pans enjoy the warm up for the actual parade. In an effort to attract more steel bands competitions were established as J'ouvert Competitions. In 1997,first, second and third place cashawrds were given for categories such as best calypso tune, individual male and female costumes etc. In an effort to keep tradition alive a year later a special "old" calypso category was established. At that time JCI's official policy , stated "steel pan music only" in an effort to keep authentic tradition alive. Lovers of J'ouvert continue to swamp Brooklyn during the carnival season with police figures of 50,000 for 1996 to JCI's claim of 150,000.
