Wet Sock: Wombat Chapter 4
Part One / Part Two / Wom’s Chapter / Part Three/ Wom 2 / Part Four/Part Five / Part Six / Wom 3 / Part Seven / Part Eight / Part Nine
Wombat was very lost. Was this because he had forgotten to pack a map? That will be left up to reader interpretation. Was this also because Wombat had forgotten what sort of quest he was supposed to go on? Absolutely. The fool hadn’t even written it down.
Wombat was pretty sure that he was supposed to be in a forest of some kind right about now, but as someone who didn’t meander in a lot of forests these days, he wasn’t so sure. He had already checked under the Super Big Rock in the backyard, but there hadn’t been any questy-type things going on around there. And swimming? Out of the question. Why? That’s classified.
If there was one thing that Wombat had learned on this trip, it was that you were not supposed to feed brass instruments to sperm whales. This information didn’t seem useful at the moment, but he decided to shelve it for the time being.
Wandering over a hill, as one does in hilly areas, Wombat spied three distinct forests on the horizon. One of them had super tall trees, like the kind you would look up at and go “hey, that’s a tall tree.” The second had super small trees, almost too small. He could barely see them with his binoculars, even when he had them facing the right way around.
If you were going to say that the third forest had trees that were just right, you would be wrong. This forest was on the far left side.
Also it was on fire.
“A forest? On fire?” Wombat queried as he refused to use the word said for no reason at all. “Now that is a questing area.”
Upon entering the forest, Wombat discovered that the fire he thought had been real was actually not. Technically. Wombat had to sit and think about it for quite a while, but the fact that it did not appear to be damaging the trees in any way caused him to call it Ghost Fire. Definitely the type of fire that a super neat quest would have.
Now at this point, you may be thinking to yourself: why does Wombat need to go into this forest? To this I have to say: I don’t know but I am as excited as you are to find out.
Wombat strolled through the not-quite-burning trees for nearly twenty-five hours. This wasn’t for any particular reason, he just thought that the Ghost Fire was super pretty and neat, and also he may have been walking in circles the entire time but don’t mention that to him, it would hurt his ego.
“Alright,” Wombat finally said to himself (his feelings on the word said had changed over the past twenty-five hours). “I think it is time to actually do some plot things.”
And as such, it is now time for plot things.
“Whomst ze Fook art vous?” a mysterious voice said from somewhere behind Wombat. Turning, Wombat made the voice somewhat less mysterious as he placed that it came from the Eight-Legged Bison behind him. The creature had bright red fur and about fifteen horns on either side of its head; it was kind of like if Clifford and Appa had an offspring.
“Hwat arr tu doin’ ein mine paludem?” the creature exclaimed.
“Ahhh, paludem? I see you are a creature of Latin,” Wombat replied. The creature blinked at him slowly so he repeated what he said in the aforementioned language. It asked Wombat if he spoke Latin.
“Possum,” Wombat said, showing just enough of his Latin abilities to be somewhat impressive. To increase the impressiveness, he added, “Quis es?”
“I am the Eight-Legged Bison,” the Eight-Legged Bison replied. The words are now translated into English for ease of reader comprehension and definitely not because Wombat no longer wanted to translate things. (Except for this next part because it may be plot-relevant later.) “Who are you?”
“Septimus vombatus,” said Wombat. “I have come because I need to complete a quest to save the world. You know, one of the seven classic plot structures, depending on who you talk to.”
“Mmmmmm, a quest, you say? I might be able to help you with that if you can do something for me.”
“Do you want me to put out the Ghost Fires?” Wombat asked.
“I want you to put out the Ghost Fires,” the Eight-Legged Bison responded. “They are distracting me from my yogalling. It is a combination of yoga and yodelling.”
“Alright,” Wombat said. “I guess we have a plot for the next chapter.”
