“Just Hug Me Tight” [Valko x MC - hurt/comfort one shot]
She was at work when her phone rang.
Gesturing to her colleague to keep going with the patrol, she took a moment to answer the call as soon as she read the name on the screen.
“Hi, Val…” she greeted him, an unconscious smile already tugging at her lips at the mere chance to hear his voice again.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
But something was off.
Her eyebrows knitted together when she caught something painfully akin to hesitation in his tone. Valko was a terrible liar, always wearing his feelings on his sleeves. And she didn’t need to see him to know that something was troubling him.
“What happened?”
“Your sixth sense is too keen for a human…” he sighed heavily on the other side of the line and then came a rustling sound -very likely his tail moving agitatedly behind him for having been caught sooner than expected.
“Valko. What’s wrong?” She questioned again, her tone firmer than before as something like urge and concern churned in her guts.
The silence that followed kept her on edge.
She even forgot where she was -wearing her Hunter uniform, standing in the middle of a busy street as she had just stopped her patrol shift to answer his call. But the surroundings felt so distant from her at the moment, she could only hear his nervous breathing next to her ear.
“Sweetheart, I have bad news… but it’s nothing concerning, I swear-”
His attempt to reassure her was futile.
Her hand was clutching her phone with a tight grip, her knuckles turning white while she waited for an explanation with bated breath.
“...my flight was cancelled.”
The words didn't seem to make sense at first.
“What…?”
She struggled to wrap her mind around it. A frown appeared on her face as she recalled what day was and realised that he was supposed to get home in less than a week.
“My flight was-”
“How could they cancel a flight so suddenly?” She scoffed incredulously, interrupting him without really meaning to but this was absurd.
“Something came up and they had troubles… I don’t know, sweetheart, I’m trying to understand what happened too. They didn’t give us much info…” he said, his voice exhausted and disappointed by the accident.
She sensed that there was something else that Valko hadn’t said yet, there was a frustration lingering in his words that gave it away.
She hesitated, and looked around to find somewhere to sit. Finding none, she stepped closer to the wall of a building and leaned against it.
“When… When are you going to come back then?”
The question hung between them, dreadful.
Another minute of silence passed through the line, and she knew that he was probably clenching his jaw, trying to think of something reassuring to say.
“I… I’m struggling to find another flight right now. So I don’t know if-”
He murmured sadly but interrupted himself and tried to not upset her further. “I’ll make it anyway, sweetheart. I’ll find another way, don’t worry… I’ll be back.”
She hummed quietly, not trusting herself to speak because of the lump in her throat. She was counting the days til they could be together again and now she didn’t even know how much longer she had to wait before having Valko by her side.
It made her heart ache, but at the same time she didn’t want him to feel guilty about something he didn’t have any control on.
“...I know, Val. I’ll be waiting.” She whispered back, hoping that she had hid the disappointment in her voice well.
“Keep me updated and let me know if there’s anything I can do.”
“Of course, sweetheart. I’ll call you later… Be safe... I miss you.”
“...miss you too. Bye.”
Days passed and the heavy feeling on her chest hadn’t left her since that phone call of theirs. They called and texted in an attempt to make the distance bearable but the fact that Valko was unable to find a way back to her in time made her struggle to find sleep at night.
She went through this uncertainty, even if each day spent without any news disheartened her more and more.
She longed for his presence, how his arms always found a reason to wrap around her waist and how their banters left them with breathless chuckles and big smiles on their faces.
She missed closing her eyes and letting his heartbeat lull her to sleep, and waking up early in the morning to make breakfast together with him.
She wished that Valko could be back by her side already, but she never once complained too much on the phone with him because she could feel from his voice alone how this distance was hurting him too.
She stopped looking at the calendar for the sake of her mind and pretended to not know that it passed a while from his initial planned return. Work kept her busy and tired her enough to prevent her from getting too antsy once she was alone in her apartment.
But when her day off rolled in, she felt like leaving a nightmare. Knowing that Valko would only be sadder if he found that she had spent all her free time in bed, she forced herself to be productive and took care of the housework.
Outside, the sun set and lights of the buildings shone in the darkness of the evening. She was in the kitchen, sitting at the counter with the tablet propped on one hand, and she was doomscrolling in her socials as she waited for the food delivery.
She had done grocery shopping the same morning but… she didn’t feel like cooking. Instead, she was in the mood for something already made, unhealthy enough to be a lapse in her diet but also tasty to make it worth it.
Her gaze lifted from the screen and glanced through the open-space, when someone knocked at her door. Sighing, she turned off the tablet and stood up to accept the delivery.
But when she opened the door, there wasn’t the delivery guy she was expecting.
She simply stared.
She had imagined this moment so many times that, for one impossible heartbeat, she thought her exhausted mind had finally begun playing tricks on her.
But then a smile tugged gently at his lips.
His arms opened wide invitingly.
And she literally launched herself against him.
“Woah… careful there, sweetheart, or you’ll make us tumble on the floor.” Valko chuckled warmly as he welcomed her in the embrace and rubbed her back in a slow, gentle manner.
His smile faltered when he felt something wet against the collar of his shirt and he tilted his head to the side, trying to peer down at her.
“Hey… are you alright?”
But she didn’t budge.
Keeping her face buried into the crook of his neck, breathing in his scent that she had missed so much, she clung desperately onto him.
“Just… just hug me tight.”
Her vulnerable request tugged at the strings of his heart and he didn’t waste any time complying. His arms circled her waist and tightened to make her feel him -close, real, safe.
“I’m happy to be back.”
He whispered against her hair, his lips leaving a lingering kiss on her temple.
