There wasn't anything special about that small cafe, at least not to anyone else. But Benedict Valda did so love to sit at the table outside the window in his own chair. He had been sat there for around an hour seemingly enjoying the surroundings as he scanned the passers by that walked past the fence that marked the edge of the cafe garden and the pavement. His face lit up when a young girl who could not have been more than 15 trotted into the garden and went right for him. Benedict got to his feet and opened his arms to take the girl into a tight hug in which he ruffled up her light golden hair in play before sitting back in his chair and her in the one opposite. The waitress bringing out two milk shakes the moment they had claimed their seats. An older couple entered the garden and stared daggers at Benedict while they passed them by and took a seat at the table inside on the other side of the window so they could keep an eye on them. It seemed to be something completely normal to the regent as he spoke with the teenager and drank his milkshake. She passed over a dark green book and encouraged him to open it, when he did he grinned broadly and pointed to several things inside the book and asked her questions about each, always with a proud smile on his face. Another hour passed and the second milkshakes all but dry and the older couple knocked on the window to get Benedict and the teenager's attention, interrupting a story the regent was telling the girl while they pointed angrily at their watch. The older couple got up and went to meet them outside while Benedict and the girl shared a shrug and a small giggle. He stood and hugged her again as the couple emerged to take the girl with them. She was reluctant but did eventually go with them, waving to Benedict the whole way down the path until she was out of sight, the regent returning the gesture from the cafe garden. With her no longer there to wave at Benedict went to take his seat at the table again and spotted that she had left him the dark green book, hidden on the seat of the chair. He chuckled and sat back in his chair to look over the book again, oblivious as yet that anyone had been watching him.
