Latent Defects, boy: Luke plops his big soft body into the booth cater-corner from Gareth and slides down, tilting his head against the dark green vinyl and tenderly rubbing his knees. He looks much older than the fresh-faced, chubby Jewish boy who used to buy him lunch after their stats class at CCP. He smells a little, but it’s okay.

Whaleshark, boy: Eckhart gives Vector a permethrin-impregnated bandana to tie around his wrist and uses a Rio company card to buy them both self-heating cans of dandy from a vending machine by the hangar. A boy in a faded blue flight jacket, part of a uniform from another time and place, hauls out a thick tube to feed the plane with fuel.

Latent Defects, run: “I’ve been on the site before,” Gareth says. “I promise I know how not to get run over by a backhoe.”

Whaleshark, run: One of those tall narrow street trees, a columnar oak, throws a skeleton shadow across their faces. Eckhart watches Vector like he might run, a concept that, despite the situation, amuses Vector enough to make him smile.

I will explain how I did this eventually, but I used Excel to make a bar chart of chapter lengths color-coded by POV character, which is how I realized exactly how disproportionate an amount of time I'm spending with one character
