Happy 10 years to Undertale!
(And these three goobers in particular)
Because I started the anniversary drawing...at 11 this morning (I forgot, okay), I knew I couldn't make anything super complicated and certainly couldn't make a drawing with everyone!
But I got inspired by the 10 years later pics in particular and it's really no secret that Frisk's relationship with Asriel and Chara is my favourite in the game!
I think, in some ways, with the two demon siblings being probably the most (your mileage may vary)... morally dubious characters in the game means they can showcase one of the main themes of Undertale almost all by themselves. Because if you can forgive the both of them, and give them a second chance, than you can forgive everyone.
And when I see all this art of everyone Frisk saved staying by their side 10 years after the barrier broke, this is what I think of. None of the Undertale characters are "the greatest person", all of them tried to hurt this kid for some reason or another...and yet Frisk still spared them, and extended their hand and refused to give up on them or believe they were a lost cause. ...And it's that second chance, even given to some that felt they didn't deserve it, that makes Frisk's friends love them so, so deeply and why they'll keep being a part of Frisk's life far, far into the future. Frisk never gave up on them and never let go, so, in turn, they will never give up on Frisk.
(It gains another level of importance for Chara and Asriel when you think of that eternal struggle between them, of Asriel wanting them to stay with him forever, and of Chara wanting to leave as soon as possible. Both of them have an assurance that Frisk will both never leave and never turn against them and the dreemurr siblings can finally heal the rift that broke them apart them in the first place)
Isn't it so wonderful that in some ways, all three become each other's home. that Frisk finally finds somewhere to belong, Chara finally wants to stay, that Asriel finally knows his best friends won't leave (Sometimes a promise of forever doesn't have to be possessive, or a sign of instability or something to fear. Sometimes it's as simple as "as long as I am able, I want to stay with you.")
And while I don't want to share links to YouTube right now, I leave you with three songs that remind me so much of everything Undertale is and that made me think of everything I so badly wanted to write down here (apparently instead of going to sleep, it's now 1.30 in the morning):
"Hahaha... Do you think Frisk is against this? That they are fighting from the inside? What makes you think they would lift a hand to save you after you killed them so many, many times! Did you really believe Frisk when they said they forgive you? Did you hope they would never realise what a blight you are upon this world?
It was their idea to come back down here, you see? It was Frisk's idea to strike you down, you see? I am merely about to finish what they were not brave to do themself! You are not above consequences, Asriel, we have come to collect your debt and no-one is coming to SAVE-"
(Chara is then punched in the stomach by Frisk suddenly taking back control because Frisk was indeed trying to fight from the inside this whole time, and refuses to let this boy die just as he's starting to become better and make amends. No-one deserves to die.)
This just in, Chara Dreemurr is a lying liar who lies
...then what follows is a very hectic fight, Chara and Frisk struggling for control, Chara's trying to attack, Frisk trying to sabotage them, Asriel not wanting to fight back because he doesn't want to hurt Frisk anymore. ... not anymore, he's done that enough. (And yes, he did believe Chara, that did Frisk secretly want to hurt him. Why wouldn't he? They have every reason to hate him after all)
After the fight, he realises Frisk has gone out of their way to save him twice now even after what he did, and he'll run those moments and moments over and over in his brain. That's how he catches feelings, though it'll be years before he realises them.
