Top Things Kids Need for Back to School

It may be hard to believe, but summer is officially coming to an end. In fact, some of you may have kids starting school again just next week! And with a new school year comes a whole list of things your kids need—and we don’t just mean a new pack of colored pencils. Check these off and you and your kids will be ready to begin a fresh new year.

A new backpack

This is always at the top of the school supply list—and for good reason. A backpack is the quintessential back to school item: not only does it hold all of their belongings, but it makes a style statement, too. Plan a backpack hunting day and take your kids to local shops to pick out the backpack of their choice. It will be a fun day that helps you check off this list!

School supplies

It seems that every year, the list for school supplies gets longer and longer. If you can swing it, consider picking up a few extra boxes of crayons or pencils to gift to the classroom for students in need. And make school supply shopping fun: turn it into a game to see who can collect all their supplies the quickest. It will make the errand go much faster and your kids won’t complain.

Lunch Box

Instead of throwing their lunch into a Publix plastic bag (we’ve all done that!), why not get them a nice lunch box that will keep their food cold or hot throughout the day and fits nicely in their bag? They have a ton that are super easy to clean and bonus: by using these, you are greatly impacting the environment in a positive way.

A Clear Mind

Beyond the physical items, students truly need a clear mind before starting school, whether they are entering kindergarten or high school. If you have a few days or a few weeks before the year starts, consider practicing some mindfulness at home. This can be as simple as going on a technology-free walk, taking a family yoga class, or just decompressing at the end of each day with 30 minutes of silent time.

A Schedule

Just as important as a clear mind, children also thrive on schedules. If you are overwhelmed by all of the activities starting up in August, write them down! Get a fun calendar that you can put on the fridge and teach your kids to keep up with their own schedules, too. It may seem overwhelming in the beginning, but once the schedule is put in place for a few weeks, it will feel like a breeze.

Something to Look forward to

School can be daunting for many students, and if your child is one who is dreading going back to school, try to counteract those feelings with something they can look forward to. Plan a fun weekend after their first full week back or make their favorite dinner the night of their first day. These simple gestures can make your child feel much better about any nerves they feel.
