John Galliano | Wedding Gown for Kate Moss | c. 2011 • • • Galliano's deceptively simple design for Moss was the result of four marathon fittings and months of preparation. The gown itself took its visual cues from the streamlined styles of the Jazz Age, most notably The Great Gatsby: Galliano stated that he and Moss were inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, the beautiful and troubled wife of Gatsby's author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Hence, the gown became a masterpiece of the technique of bias-cutting, originally developed in the Twenties and Thirties and which became one of Galliano's aesthetic signatures during his rise to prominence in the Nineties. Norman Hartnell | Court Presentation Ensemble | c. 1949 • • • This lavish dress, designed for an evening court presentation, exemplifies Hartnell's gala style, with jeweled encrustations of flowers above a full skirt made of yards and yards of tulle over sparkling gold lamé. It was completed with a court headdress of Prince of Wales feathers and a train that hangs from the shoulders, and accompanied by a feather fan, all traditionally worn by a woman when formally presented to the monarch. Bob Mackie | Starlett O’Hara Costume for “The Carol Burnett Show” | c. 1976 • • • The curtain dress was conceptualized and designed by The Carol Burnett Show costumer Bob Mackie. The script originally called for the dress to be hanging off of Burnett, but Mackie did not find it funny. He asked the art director for a real curtain rod and green fabric and made the dress on a mannequin. Burnett said that she came into costume fittings and when she saw the curtain rod she said it was the most brilliant sight gag ever. The curtain dress scene was named #2 in TV Guide's January 23–29, 1999 list of "The 50 Funniest TV Moments of All Time".
